Ionic - bluetooth, wifi or both?

So I've traditionally just had a fitbit watch that connected via Bluetooth.  What is the wifi connection all about?  Is Wifi something you can setup "in addition to" Bluetooth? or "in place of" Bluetooth?

@jwckauman- Both.  The Bluetooth is used to sync your Ionic to your phone or computer, and the WiFi is used to download music, apps, etc., to the Ionic.  During the setup process of the Ionic, it asks you to configure the WiFi and verifies it's connection.

My ionic does not recognize any WiFi networks. It searches and doesn’t show any WiFi networks. I am right next to the router. My phone is connected. What is wrong with this soon to be called a **ahem** Fitbit?

@flyboy8Is your Wifi network set to DHCP if not then you will have to assign an IP address in the current range of your router manually.  If it is DHCP then try assigning an IP address manually anyway just make sure it is one that is not currently in use by another device and is in the same address range as the router.

Also your Wifi needs to be 2.4 GHZ not 5.0 in order to work

The link says nothing about dhcp. It says it will connect to wep, wpa, wpa2 networks. I believe this is what I have. Furthermore, I have no idea how to change the address. This is the issue with these gadgets, they don’t work for the common user. They should be turn key and go.

@flyboy8  I agree with you things would be better if they went straight out of the box. 8 times out of 10 networking works straightway, however those other times when it doesn't can be a headache.

DHCP simply means your router will assign an IP address to a new device when it connects to it so long as the device you are trying to connect finds it and you enter in the passphrase. Most routers when set up by your ISP have DHCP enabled to make adding new devices to you home network easy.

While frustrating sometimes it doesn't always work so smoothly.  My advice would be to contact Customer Support by phone as they are trained to talk you through setting things up over the phone. trying to do so via forum post I'd most likely confuse you as I have already done 😉 

Furthermore you could try reading this link Why wifi won't connect ionic there are other links as well on that page that will tell you how to set up things manually.

Also as I mentioned previously Ionic won't work using a 5 GHz network you need to be on 2.4 GHz this can only be done via you router and is not easy to explain how as each router is different and also depends on if your router is a dual band or not you will need to check your router manual to find out, Customer Services should be able to help you with this as well.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help and if I've simply confused you even more, networking is great when it works straight off without any issues, but when you actually need to do things manually it can be a real beearch to figure out.
