Any diabetics using the FB?

Wondering if there are any diabetics out there who are using the FB and working towards weight loss?  I'm insulin dependent and trying to lose weight but more importantly trying to regain my health and physical strength while balancing everything.  A challenge a day! Love to hear your stories....

My A1C was higher then yours, and I had no idea I was diabetic, the last time I had my sugars checked they were normal and that was july of last year...I've never heard of loseit.com, I to think fitbit is hard to track food, you always have to put it in even if you put it to your favorites for some reason it's never there....I am Catholic as well and even tho I didn't use food for Lent (because I was still to sick), I used prayer, I have never been able to lose weight before, and maybe that's because I never stuck to it as long as this....but I take my diabetes very serious....I even started a group on FB it's called Getting "Real" with Type 2......just started it so don't really have any members yet, looking for serious ppl who want to get healthy and cheating is not an option....congrats on the 20 pounds that's awesome, I'm down 21 but it's taken me since the middle of January.....

I am a serious lifestyle changer. I have small size cloths I am waiting to fix into. Little by little I am getting there. Just doing small goals and many of them.

I'm a type 2 Diabetic and have been for 20 years.   My husband bought me a fitbit to help me get in shape and be cognizant of my food and activity.  I'm really loving the information I can get from it, and it definitely helps me.    My BS drops when I exercise but I have read that it can have the opposite effect on some people.  I salute those of you who have managed to drop weight and get fit.  I hope to join you!

I have lost 50 pounds, but I still have to take medication for my diabetes, and I still get high readings if I don't watch what I eat. I have had type 2 diabetes for three years, and am 67 years old. The Fitbit really makes me walk more. Mary Lynn

There is light and hope at the end of the Type 2 Diabetes scourge.  I didn't have any liver damage back in Oct 2013 when I was diagnosed with this "wonderful news."  Weighed in over 300 pounds and only 5'8" and 57 years old.  Flash forward to Aug 2014 when I got down to 170 pounds, ate right, and exercised daily (walking at least three times a day for 7-15 miles).  My doc said I could go off my metaformin horse pills and that I was essentially "diabetes" free.  Now, I've heard many on this thread say once you have it you're never "cured."  I only know what my doc told me.  She said I lost it when I lost my 130 pounds.

You, too, can get to this happy place in life if you perservere and find the right nutrition intake balanced with effective exercise.  When your body and mind whine and complain...just do it.

LewWagner,
that is fabulous news! You really made a huge change. That is what I'm
striving for at 58. I have a very dark picture in my mind of my future if
I don't change. Yet what really motivates me is not the dark future in my
mind, but how absolutely good I will feel when I make the changes.

Have you had any trouble maintaining your healthy lifestyle?

Thank you so much for sharing your story.

Lew, this is correct if you are a Type 2 diabetic. You can become diabetes "free." Unfortunately if you're a Type 1 that is not the case!

I have had Type 1 diabetes for 56 years! Am thankful everyday when I wake up and have another day to be around!

Thanks for your encouragement for those with Type 2!

I am super motivated to change, and it has not been terribly hard. I try not to eat a lot at night.

Susan KH,

No, I've pretty much tried to live the same life style I set up when I lost my weight (proper eating habits, exercising regularly, no piecing, smaller portions, etc.).  Temptation rears its ugly head now and then, so I constantly try to not put myself in situations where I am deluged with bad food choices.  Boy, how I miss Grimaldi's pizza, though!!!

I was doing fine loosing weight. Now I have a Kidney stone and I have to replan my meals to be low in Oxalates. Now is is getting more complicated.  Everything I eat seems to have Oxalates in them. I have to eliminate the High numbers like spinach. re-calculating my meals now. Many of the High Oxalates foods are healthy foods that were on my list.

You mean you have a Kidney stone as well.  I am educating myself on the HIGHs and Lows of Oxalates. I just gave away all the nuts I had in my house to the Ymca staff. I am slowly getting High Oxalate foods.I have three months until they check me again.

Hi javasjen

I was diagnosed over 16 years ago and was able to control it without medication, but alas I lost my freedom and now have to take medication.  I bought myself a fb in January, was doing well for awhile, started a new job at the beginning of Feb, and slacked off.  Now with this turn of events , I have to kick myself in the backside and start again with the diet and exercise.  Good luck to you.

With proper food , yes you can be cured from Diabeties. I am now working to get off meds. have lowered my meds. and daily sugar levels have droped to 70,80, 90. but sometimes I cheat and eat toooo much or the wrong food and it will go back up some.

You can be "cured" if you are a Type 2 with proper food, exercise etc.! You cannot be "cured "from Type 1 HOWEVER you can avoid the horrible complications of Type ! by keeping your sugars in check, i.e. 70,80,90!

my doctor said there is no cure. Yes, you can eat right and exercise to get off all your medications but you will always be a diabetic. As we get older
it might come back at no fault of your own. I know people lost all their weight and exercise every day but are back on insulin. Just another reason
it sucks to get old.

I have been a diabetic for 15 years. I lost 40 pds and have 25 more to go. Exercise every day. Get my 20,000 steps in. I take less insulin
but still take the metformin. I too would like to get off all of it. A1C was at 6.0 in Jan. Over the years I slip and start being stupid and
eat the wrong foods. Then it goes up to 8.0. So far I have stuck to the program for over a year with no slip ups.

good luck to you. It is tough sticking to a diabetic program. Don’t give up ever.
