Any diabetics using the FB?

Wondering if there are any diabetics out there who are using the FB and working towards weight loss?  I'm insulin dependent and trying to lose weight but more importantly trying to regain my health and physical strength while balancing everything.  A challenge a day! Love to hear your stories....

Type 2 diabetic born into a family of type 2 diabetics. Coming to terms with it was hard for me but I got my glucose under control and recently my a1c has stayed at a steady 5.2 which my doctor says is no longer considered diabetic-- but someone should have told my wasit because I'm as big as I've ever been!

I'm more active than most people my age, I like horseback riding and swimming and hiking but a knee injury keeps me from enjoying those activities to the fullest and the ortho specialist won't touch my knee untill I get some of the weight off.

So Jerri, you're on humalog insulin AND Metformin? Gosh your A1C is great at 6.0! The culprit is SUGAR and sugar by any other name is STILL sugar, anything ending is -ose! Finally, it seems the general public and medical doctors are starting to see how addictive sugar, white flour are! The horrible thing is when your Blood Sugar drops so low i.e. 45 what's the first thing I grab.....sugar! And the cycle begins again! I read it takes 12 to 72 hours to get sugar out of your system. So if I can go 12-72 hours without a low BS I'm very happy! However ANY exercise I try drops my BS dramatically! I suspend my pump any time I walk or exercise.

20,000 steps....wow! I have to work at getting 10,000-12,000 in! But I'm doing it!

Best of luck loosing the extra 25 pounds! You'll add years to your life!

Diabeties CAN be cured.

Best Answer

I believe that is is curable. I am pre-diabletic and loosing successfully. I extect to have a lower A1C # A blood test has been ordered soon. But then, comes the maintenance of staying inside that zone staying active and not gaining the weight back. I want that to be my new lifestyle.

Someday there may be a cure found, but as of now there is no cure, only
control! Just because you may have your BG and/or A1C in the "normal" range
doesn't mean that you're cured.

There is no cure yet. Just because you may have your BG and/or A1c in the "normal" range, it doesn't mean that you have been cured, only that it's under control.

If you no longer take medicine, and you have a normal a1c YOU ARE CURED!!! If your previous medical records were destroyed there wouldn't be anyone who could diagnose you with diabetes. If its undetectable then it doesn't exist!!

You have to keep the same good lifestyle to keep from sliding back into the same valley of the pills.

Sabern,

I don't know one Type 1 diabetic that has been cured! I 'd be interested in knowing HOW this happened if that is so.

Hi Everyone,

Just started wearing my Fitbit Charge today so I was just checking out the forums.

I was told by my doctor in January that I was T2 but she told me that with lifestyle changes, "all this could go away". I'd been on a low carb diet in the past (a whole other story) and decided to start again. It's the only diet I can stick to.

I had an appointment 2 months later with the diabetic nurse who was less sure of the diagnosis. She said my fasting glucose reading was 7mm/l which was just on the border of being T2 and my HbA1c reading was in the normal range and by the time I saw the nurse I had already dropped from 15st 12lbs to 14st 6lbs (I think she was ever so slightly pleased).

Anyway I've just taken a second blood test and await the results but doing my own reading my glucose level was 5.6 mm/l so fingers crossed.

Exercise-wise I bought an exercise bike and have been doing high intensity interval training (see Michael Mosley's book 'Fast Exercise') for the last 2 months. I also started introducing some strength exercises.

For all you Type 1s out there I'm now 61 years of age and have a mother who will be 87 this year. She's been a diabetic for 60 plus years and as far as I know has never done a days exercise in her life.

Best to all,

You are doing all the right things. Well done. Just continue the good work and change your lifestyle. The YMCA has a 16week program to control the numbers. They stress low fat. I am doing that and tracking my food on myfitness pal and dropping the weight. Tracking food and activity is the key in that order.

I sometimes think that isn't really right, cause one day your not diabetic and the next day you are....just something to think about...

Amen to that.....most ppl don't agree with that, I know from what I was told by a doctor if you are diabetic and you have a gastric bypass you know longer are diabetic, so then if there is no cure, then they are cured....I believe to, if you don't take medicine and your numbers are normal then your normal again....

Type 1 and Type 2 are WAY different......

if you don't take medicine, and your numbers are normal....then what is the difference with someone who has never been diagnosed with Type 2.. they have normal numbers and don't take medicine....it's the same darn thing to me.......I think you still have to maintain your weight, and watch what you eat, but don't normal ppl have to do the same thing??????????????

That's interesting! Before being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I would take my BSL after riding my bike to work and often it would be high - 7.5+. A dietician at work told me that taking your BSL after exercise was not a good guide as the activity releases glycogen due to breaking down of body fat. Since being diagnosed, I have been advised to watch the HbA1c as a more accurate picture of what's going on.

Are you eating a low GI diet and being helped by a dietician specialising in diabetes?

Best Answer

I am on a low fat diet from the Y's dibetic program. Not a dietician. Just found out I have a Kidney stone and have to steer clear of Oxalates. I have always been on a low sugar diet.

Congrats to you. Check out DrFuhrman.com for info about getting off meds. Wow you have done an excellent job so keep it up. The complications of Diabetes stink and it sounds like you are reversing things. It is possible for many peeps to cut back and get off the meds with a healthy diet, exercise and low stress.

Go for it.
