Any diabetics using the FB?

Wondering if there are any diabetics out there who are using the FB and working towards weight loss?  I'm insulin dependent and trying to lose weight but more importantly trying to regain my health and physical strength while balancing everything.  A challenge a day! Love to hear your stories....

Jerseysmom,

A1c of 11.6 is equal to an average  blood sugar level of 290 which is extremely out of control. Your eyesight, kidneys, heart and blood vessels and nerves are being damaged everyday with high sugar levels. Get the help you need immediately to control your blood sugar.

Low carb and sugar diet will help you so much.

All the best to you,

Barbara

Love reading everyone's comments and replies! I was babysitting my 2 little grandsons so I couldn't get in all my steps this weekend but I ate well and was walking and active with them but I couldn't take them on a big walk...it was pouring all weekend. I want to keep my motivation and good health. I am going to the Caribbean in October from 9-19...not an all inclusive so I am a bit nervous about what I will drink and eat since the travel doctor told me no salads 😱. Going to Guadeloupe so if anyone has been I would love to know how you managed with food etc... Off to work now. Fitbit on and wishing you all a great day!! Most of my steps will come after work...tied to my laptop during the day! 😊

Frenchie,

your doctor would not want you to go any lower with the A1C. That is pretty good. At least you take it serious because so many think the medicine or
insulin will be all they need to handle their diabetes. And most won’t walk at all. You are doing great.

I take shots and metformin. Have been able to reduce the dosage thanks to fitbit and changing my eating habits big time. But for years I didn’t take it
serious either. I won’t use a pump ever. My cousin almost lost her life 3 times when hers failed. She was in a coma twice for 6 weeks because the
pump quit working. Don’t ask me why she keeps going back to the pump. I would of sued them instead. She only weighs 125 pds.

You are sure on the right track . Keep up the good work and you will live to be 120.

I am so happy I found all of you! I hope we can inspire each other to get through the rough patches and cheer when we are doing well. I have to get back to my work haha don't want to get the boot 😉

Thanks Frenchie,

When your A1c is low as 4 you can lower, I mean, ask the doctor to lower your medication.

I bet that you were active with grandsons if they are young.  Please send us some rain as I'm

in northern ca about 1 1/2 hrs from a raging Valley fire that has destroyed 585 house so far.

Stay strong and determined folks,

Barbara

No excuses is the answer. Heavens we can try and weasel out of exercise and even healthy food choices or portion control. Having that compassionate observer that doesn't fall for the weasel tricks of excuses is the key. Practice makes it stronger and clearer so go girl.

Hi Anrento,

Thanks for the vote of confidence. These high A1cs are so darned dangerous.  Congrats on hitting 6.0. I bet you can make it into the 5. something zone on the next A1c test or soon. Keep up the good work and make your cells happyCat Very Happy.

Jumping around doing a rain dance for you!! Stay safe!!!!!! I hope my A1C is lower this time but I don't know what it will be. I keep true to what I know I should eat and do exercise daily. Sometimes I feel like I want to eat about 3 loaded baked potatoes haha but then I say to myself...do you want to stay healthy or go down the slippery slope of eating out of control and the consequences...that brings me back to picking good food. Meal planning and prep has improved for me and I scour websites and Pinterest for healthy recipes and ideas!! I also look at clothes to keep me on track 🙂 I hope everyone is choosing to be as healthy as they can today!! We can do it...for sure. There is lots we can't control but there is also lots we can!! Have a great day...off to take my doggies out

Can you see the fires? Do you have anything packed in case you have to leave ? I am afraid of tornadoes but fires really freak me out.
Hope for the best. And hope for rain and cooler weather with no winds

Frenchie Mama

I believe the fire, about 40 miles away, is finally less out of control now. Can't see the fire from here. Thank you for the rain dance. Glad you remind yourself to choose health when 3 fully loaded baked potatoes cross your mind. I prize long term health sooooo much more than some high carb indulgence. Nope, not me, I don't want to hurt my body and make myself sick is what I tell myself. There is so much that is healthy and yummy to eat and I'm always glad for my choice later.

All the best,

Barbara G

@dancefoxtrot I am glad the fire seems more under control and I hope for lots of rain for you all! It's great to hear you are doing well. You are an inspiration. I hope I never lose my motivation to keep eating well and keep active and work on fitness. I signed up for the "getting active" class for diabetics in my area. I believe they will talk about strength training. It's 2 full afternoons a week apart and I signed up for early November as I will be away when they run the ones in October. How often do you check your bs? My doctor told me that I don't need to check mine all the time if I keep eating properly and exercising. Maybe once a week is fine or if I feel like something is off or I am sick...I feel nervous about doing that but I am drumming through the test strips..lol

Hi FrenchieMama

Since your A1c is down to 5.8 and you are on oral meds. you have the option of testing less often. But you said that you are newly diagnosed so I suggest keep logging your BG if you can afford the strips. Do you test once a day or more? Have you tested at bedtime or 2 hours after a meal yet?  Do you take the Metformin with meals as the instructions say to do so it works well? Sounds like you are doing a great job reversing the high blood sugar situation. The challenge is to make it a life long habit and keep losing the weight and avoiding refined carbs and sugar.  I hope that your A1c fell some more as well.

I like information as it helps me make good decisions.

We are all somewhat of information seekers here.  It's one of the reasons I keep posting and reading here.  I always learn something from this group!  It's wonderful to have found a group of people searching for ways to keep or get healthy all in one place!  If I lost my fitbit, I would still keep posting and reading here just for the information I gain.

Thanks to all of you!

Now one more thing I wanted to say.  I found out quite receintly that there are some carbs that humans don't digest at all.  They are in the weirdest foods - foods you would think would be safe.  But it causes me to wonder, if we eat a lot of them, what the effect of these carbs are on our bodies long term?  They are called FODMAPS.  Anyone know more about them?

@dancefoxtrot I do all of that...test before bedtime, fasting, 2 hours after meals and sometimes 3. I also always take my Metformin with my meals because I know it needs to sit for a while so it can work properly.I am home from work today making my grandson's 6th birthday cake for tomorrow...I used to sample it but I know how moist it will be and I know how it will taste so I am good with just making and decorating it. My son (his dad) has a birthday on Wednesday..same for him. It's not hard for me to make that choice. I might have a tiny sliver but I know to count it in my carbs for the meal (and the day)..I track every single thing that goes in my mouth anyway..keeps me honest. I love Myfitnesspal. I still  am on 1200 calories as per the myfitnesspal recommendation. I try to keep to the Diabetes Association good guide with the exception of carbs..too many for me to handle..I keep my total carbs at 120-130 per day and that includes anything that has a carb component. I have around 25g of fiber at a minimum and always drink my water. I was dehydrated when I was first diagnosed and it threw off all sorts of bloodwork but that got sorted as soon as I started drinking all my water. Wishing everyone a great day!!! I am so happy to have found other people who are trying to keep healthy with Diabetes as well.

Frenchie,

Extraordinarily good self care you described below. ADA is ridiculous in advising more carbs as it won't help reverse Type 2 to the extent that it can be reversed. You are well on your way and I bet that you can find a lower A1c at the end of Sept.. I know of people who got it down to 5.4 in the normal range from 7. You could probably test less if you want to.  Testing and logging food is the best way to see what adversely jacks up the bg but it seems like you are being careful. Lower carbs that are not good fresh fiberous veggies is super important. I love your restraint not to taste the cake batter.
