Healthy November 2017 (Step) Goal Challenge

Halloween is over but the temptation season is just getting started.  So purge the house of all that leftover candy (what, there isn't any, well carry on then ...), and set some goals for November!

How It Works:

The purpose of this challenge is to keep track of your daily step goals for November 2017. This is not a competition to see who can do the most amount of steps, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of 30 for the month can you hit your goal.

Some of you might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and some might have a variable goal throughout the week, for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = 6k steps a day
Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for this challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved / 30.

Optional
3) Post either your constant or variable (anything you want) goal.
4) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved / 30.

The optional items list has grown over the past months. That's why the title has steps in (). In the end it's about setting goals and improving habits. So the optional items can really be anything. Running, biking, weight lifting, food goals, etc. Some will add a goal that is not daily - ie. wanting to do so many strength training workouts in the month - so you might be aiming for a number that is less than 30 for some goals -- maybe 5, 10, or 15. Really, it's just completely open.

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and decide scale back the number of steps due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your daily step goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Feel a little silly doing just two pull-ups to give my shoulder some rest.  OTOH, my streak of consecutive days for the pull-up and push-up "at least one a day" goals is now at 112.  That's kind of cool.  Speaking shoulder rest, I already did my Nov. 22 gym workout today, and switched from barbell the incline and regular bench presses that were scheduled for today to one-arm incline and bench presses with a dumbbell.  Seemed to work pretty good, as I was able to exercise the left side with lower weight to avoid aggravating the shoulder pain, but could still use heavy weight on the right side to build strength.

Jane signed us up for a Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving and I was pretty happy with my time of 26:20, especially because of lots of hills and because I never run anywhere.  Crossover from lots of bike riding I suspect.  But calves are still plenty sore two days later.

So the goals other than weight were for 25th.  I did my last weigh in-for the month this morning 11/26) and wound up gaining 1.7 lbs over the month.  That is near the low end of what I was shooting for, so I'll give myself a B on that goal.  If it had been mostly muscle mass I would have gotten an A, but based on my scale readings it was mostly (1.3 lbs) fat.  I am a little disappointed in that, but the weight change itself is pretty small, so getting an accurate division between lean mass and fat mass is difficult.  (I also do a single point caliper measurement every week -- no change over the month -- and measure my waist -- +1/2 inch).  Hopefully the proportions change over the next few months and once I've gone through the whole bulking and cutting cycle I wind up with more muscle at a given weight.

Warmer weather makes it easier to get out and walk, it was 67 yesterday and due to hit 71 today.

11/24 steps 17.2 k, 50 floors, 7.77 miles

11/25 steps 10 k, 9 floors, 4.59  miles, another "town" day just barely made 10 k

Beautiful day, got up to 74. Another record high for this time of year.

This turns out to be "bragging" day. Worked putting up new pasture fence all day yesterday and hit a new high step count (without my horse). It is a level pasture so my floor count is low.

11/27 steps 21,357,  15 floors, 9.6 miles

You’ve been having some great days there @benvegi.  I think we will get into the 60s here in the DC — pretty nice for nearly December.

Ok...I've totally fallen off of the wagon this month.  I've gotten back into it this week, but I'm still disappointed in myself. I've been going through a lot the last two weeks, hopefully December will be better. I'll post my new goals in the December thread.

Month-End totals:

7k steps a day - 18/30

30 day arm challenge - 14/30

End of month

11/28 steps 18 k, 36 floors, 8.28

11/29 steps 17.4 k, 40 floors, 7.98 miles

11/30 steps 19.8 k, 23 floors, 8.96 miles

30/30 on steps, 23/30 floors, 25/30 miles.  30/30 yoga

On Tuesday my wife gave me an early Christmas present of a new Charge 2. Much nicer than the Charge HR that retired.

What are we going to do for December? I'm up for another month.  How do we add/recruit more people into this group?

Hit all my goals for the month, but getting a little tendonitis in my left arm to go with a bit of pain in my left shoulder.  As it turns out this next week is a "deload" week in my weight-lifting program so I will probably take the opportunity for a full rest on upper body exercises.  Maybe even for two weeks.

@benvegi -- Congratulations on the new CH2.  Nice Christmas present!  That has become my primary fitbit.  Nice size with a reasonable amount of information on the wrist, and I don't feel weird about also wearing watch on the other wrist when I have the CH2 on.  I also like how easy it is to change bands, and have picked a couple third-party leather ones.  Enjoy.

If no one else starts a monthly challenge for December, I'll probably start one up again in January.  Need more participants, though.

Resting from weight lifting is a good idea. I lifted for about 10 years
back in the 90's. Think I over did the weights and ended up with a locked
up shoulder and some lower back issues. Went to less stress on body by
walking. I do get plenty of "weight" lifing working here on the farm, grain
bags, salt blocks, putting up new fences. Not to mention my woodtuning
hobby which starts with cutting the tree down, cutting it into turnable
blocks and placing on the lathe. Many of my wood blanks weigh about 35 lbs
to start.

OK about the break till January, let me know (my email is benvegi7@gmail.com
)

Thanks for the tip on extra bands for my Ch2. I got a standard bank in
purple but will now look for a nice leather one for when we go out.
Especially this time of year we end up a parties, dinner's and the like and
purple does not go well with good clothes.
