How often should I weigh in?

Best Answer

I try to weigh myself every morning, just after I shower, I've been doing this for years and it helps me be cognizant of my weight and see trends as they emerge. A day or two of being up a couple of pounds is no big deal but all week tells me that I've put on some pounds and need to address them.

Swim 2.4 miles, Bike 112 miles, Run 26.2 miles and brag for life. If I can do it anyone can!

I also weigh in every morning, but I use it as a tool. I also keep a food diary, so if I'm up, I look at what I did the day before and can often find the "culprit".  I also agree that taking regular measurements are another great tool.

Another, simpler thing, is to take notice of how your clothes feel.  Are they comfortable, a little tight or do you need to go shopping because they are dropping off you 🙂

Another thing, if you have a fancy scale that measures body fat and muscle mass, track them too.  Again, if your weight is staying pretty much the same, but you are working out and increasing muscle mass and your body fat is going down, you are on the right track.

I weigh in everyday due to the fact I am way too paranoid about weight sneaking up on me. If the scales are up three days in a row I rethink things maybe more cardio. A person could go up or down by 5 lbs daily especially during summer. Dehydration vs. rehydration, fluid retention.. But when you see progress the rest of the day is started off happy!

I started weighing myself every day when I started getting serious about weight loss.  At the beginning (2mths ago) it was great the first month because I was losing weight.  I am now having to pump it up and work alot harder to see more results.  I don't weigh myself everyday anymore and once a WEEK is enough, like you said you get discouraged if you don't lose any weight and it becomes an obcession.

justdoitalready, don't get obsessed because it is not worth it!  I used to be that way myself but it can get to you.  Your weight fluctuates on a daily basis due to our intake of food and liquids.  You just stay with your regiment of your weight loss and keep a positive mind that you will reach your weight goal.

I have been weighing myself everyday for the last 30 years and it keeps me in line because if I go a few days without weighing myself, I will be in for a surprise on the weight I gained.

Of course I am 68 and am not as mobile as I used to be and have several health issues but I am not giving up of meeting my goal of losing another 20 pounds which I know I will do!  So far I have lost 20 pounds but got another 20 to go!

Take care and don't get obsessed and give up and keep a positive mind and you will reach your weight goal!

Take care!

Well, hmmm. Seriously.

Based on the responses I would say everyone really has an opinion on what works best for them and thier mindset.  The folks who have a different opinion of me, its cool, but you won't change mine.

I weight myself everyday, good bad or indifferent I enjoy seeing the graph, and feel that when I go DANG I went up a little in weight it helps me in my food choices during the day.

  I get it we fluctuate.

I get it every day is a lot for some.

I'm down 35 pounds, so it appears to be working for me.

This post however, has been going on for sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long.  i think we should change it.  The top choices on google

How often should I wash my dog?

How often should I wash my hair?

How often should married couples have sex?

I'll go first, My answers

1.      When he/her stinks and you don't want the snuggle on the couch for fear of having to wash smelly doggie blankets.

2.   Very similar to the first answer.  However, the caviatt is for some of you girls out there that possibly paid big money for a hairstyle or weave or whatever, then extend the date to the "doggie blanket washing" concept - its all good.  Me, guy, every time I take a shower, its on the shower checklist.

3. Well, uhm, er, everyday except the days when you have to more than once.

Ok,

I agree that it is a very personal issue and that there are two sides and we should do what works for us. I like your ideas to move on.

So,

How often to wash the dog - when he stinks. We have a 17 year old miniature poodle who is a little gamey, but we love him anyway.

How often to wash hair - when working out, daily.

Sex - when either of you wants it.

I suppose it much up to the individual.  My friend weighs herself every day, and finds it motivating (rather than discouraging) if the number hasn't changed.  I'm the opposite: I weigh myself only every couple weeks or longer to keep from losing steam.  It's whatever works for you!

I weigh daily, I know that fluxuations are always possible, and that I will have up and down days.
This week I have really started walking (going from an average of 3,000 steps a day to 12,000) and realize that is likely the reason for GAINING weight on a sub 2,000 kcal diet (I am 74" tall at nearly 300#).
I hope the added muscle mass will help with burning fat faster.

ac7ss - Good luck with your efforts. I lost 24 pounds in 5 months by walking 6400 steps or about 3 miles every morning. Every morning. Burned about 1800 - 2000 calories a day. Watched what I ate. Lots of greens, fruits and water. No chips, soda, cookies, white bread, rice, etc. Alo got people around me to stop pushing food at me. That helped alot. Light yogart was helful as well. Good luck to you and check in with me 6 months from now when you've lost 30+ pounds. You'll be well on your way to a steady reduction of weight and better eating habits.

I appreciate you sharing your success, it gives me inspiration to keep going.  I have been abiding to a good diet, have slipped craving chocolate and some wine but for the most part I have been steadfast with my diet in check.  I do walk 2 miles in morning, go to the gym 5 days/wk, 2 rest days in between so exercise is factored into my routine.  I will keep in check with you in 6 months as I want to be accountable to my goal.  Losing 50 lbs by end of October!  Ok, keep in touch, thank you for your reply and consideration.

Thank you, I find it difficult to weigh in every day. But I weigh in ever 2 weeks. Still not really losing the weight that I want to. I find it hard to do when I spring both ankles and my knee. I will recover.

I do weigh twice a day, once after I wake up (as they say the most accurate measure), second time at night before dinner after I come from work.

A good day when these numbers are about the same, meaning that I was active enough to offset whatever I had for breakfast and lunch plus snacks.

Ocasionally I like to do a check before and after work out - that's just for fun and to see if it actually goes down.

It usually does: a 1.5 hrs of a work out mix usualy gets 1-1.5 pounds off, granted that some of it or most of it is water weight.

More fun to do it before and after tennis game - that's more impacting - gets me down by as much as 3 pounds after 2+ hours on the court, especially on a hot day. But again - it's mostly water and it bounces back, at least most of it does.

I also got Aria recently. The thing I like about it that it gives me body fat %, which I usually don't get from regular scale.

Other than that - it's just a scale. It does appear that it gives me a slightly higher weight than other scales (both at home and at the gym), but not much - about half a pound.
