Hi Everyone, I am still learning how to navigate this FitBit Community discussion. A little info about me. I have been overweight all of my adult life. I have been on so many different diets, have never given up trying to get rid of the excess baggage. At one time, about thirty years ago I was at my heaviest....220 pounds on my 5'2' frame. However through the years and especially the last two years I have managed to drop 45 pounds. I had a FitBit a year ago but sent it back on recall and now have the FitBitHR. I have had a herniated disc, bunions, flat feet, sciatic nerve problems along with a few other issues..........not complaining, just stating the facts. I am blessed with a wonderful family, and hubby and I are into model railroading, we play Wii bowling every day for an hour and I am a painter of landscapes and scenery etc. I try to keep busy. I have never given up trying to lose weight, would like to lose twenty - twenty-five more pounds. When I started using my FitBit I realized I was only getting in about 3000 steps per day, I am now up to 5000, yesterday got over 6000. For me that is an accpmplishment!! I will be 78 in July, so I am writing this for motivation for all who are struggling with weight.....don't give up, you only fail when you stop trying. Have a great weekend and Happy Mother's Day to moms everywhere!!

Really nice to see new posts in our older women's section.
Most all of us struggle to limit calories, eat nutrient dense food that is tasty and burn lots of calories to lose the excess. it is easier with support and the goal of steps.
Welcome. Portion size and wise choices count for a lot.
let's get healthier together.
Happy Mom's Day,
Barbara G

cttt and dispatcher,
Don't give up. We make muscle when we get more active which is dense so you may not see instant results. Drink lot's of water. log every morsel that you eat for a while and don't miss a thing. If you are burning 500 more calories than you are eating you will lose weight. Try to avoid late night snacking as you will store it not burn it.
All the very best,
Barbara G

I think you have to go to your subscriptsions and "uncheck" that you get an email when someone replies. It's on you right hand side. Like if you're responding to me, look on your right. I know, this can be a pain when you are getting a million responses. Only check the box when you want to keep track of the thread. Hope this helps.
Welcome to the forum!

Hi, Kim. I am 61 and want to lose 20 pounds. Lost 22 pounds three years ago with weight watchers, but managed to let it creep back on. Can you tell me a reasonable amount of daily calories to help lose 20 pounds. I thought 1500 might be a good start and so far haven't gone over that. I have only had my FitBit since Mother's Day (gift) and haven't had much time for actuall exercise, but averaging at least 5,000 steps per day. Hit 10,000 steps the second day I had it. I have only lost 1 pound so far, but am trying my best to watch what I eat and track it each day. Any advise is appreciated.

I am 55 and want to lose 20 lbs. I need friends and motivation
I have lost some weight already but want some more off.
I do know that since I have been walking, I am much healthier. So sometimes, dont look for the immediate benefits of walking, the long terms benefits is what you want

@mjxcw wrote:I just turned 63 and feel that I have to work three times as hard to lose the weight. I recently joined a gym with a pool. I highly recommend water aerobics and swimming. In the pool I can jump and run and leap and hurdle. My body feels so light. I hope all of you who are hitting a wall try it. It is absolutely wonderful.
So glad I ran across your post today. I was born in 1953, so we are close in age. I've had the FitBit Charge for a few months now and it does help motivate me some to move more. A nearby school has an indoor pool available for community use during restricted times for a fee. I like your sentence "My body feels so light." and I think I'll take your advice soon. Thanks for your post.

Hi Kim, Check your dashboard for calories in vs calories out. After several days you should be at a negative of 3600 calories or one pound. I'm 67, so in order for me to lose weight I've had to drop to between 1100 to 1300 calories per day, and have been losing about 1 1/2 lbs per week. Good luck to you and lets keep on walking and losing. After five years of being 40 lbs over weight, I decided now was the time. I have lost 10 lbs in about two months. I know in two more months I'll be half way to my goal. Yea!! I hope you will be too. I wish I had gotten this motivated three years ago when I only had 20 lbs to lose.
I started strenght training just yesterday. That should help too! If you can find the time, strenght training is also important! Good Luck to you

Denalane,
Welcome. The formula is eat 500+ calories less than you burn so increasing your steps each day will go a long way. 500cals x 7 days = 3500 cals lost = 1 lb lost. Take the stairs, dance during TV commercials, move, move, move.. Walk and talk while on the phone. Add 500 more steps each week so 5500 this week then 6000 next week. It works and doesn't take very much extra time at all. Put on your favorite music and dance like no one is watching. Make health a priority as in 16 hrs awake surely there is time to walk for health. I'm 74 and the weight can still come off. I eat about 1200 to 1300 cals. most days and I dance or walk 10-13k a day. Down 10.3 lbs in about 2 1/2 months so that is 1 lb. a week.
We can do this life style change. It is a way of living heathfully for a life time.
Salads, lots of veggies, beans, berries and only lean protein. It takes a 3-4 weeks to break a habit and substituting a better one works wonders.
Actually 1 lb since Mother's Day is fine. As you exercise more you build muscle which burns more calories in the end.
Let's all keep at it for our health.
Barbara G
