Memorial Day Challenge

Welcome to the next Challenge!

This one will start on April 18 and continue to Memorial Day (May 29th) 2017.   That gives us 6 weeks to work toward our next set of goals as we try to lose weight or maintain in a healthy way.

Everyone is welcome to join this terrific group. You can post once weekly or every day - whatever you like - to share your journey, give and get support, offer advice, get some tips.  We have celebrated each other's successes, and empathized with the setbacks.  I personally found, the more I respond to others, the easier it is for me to focus on my own journey in a positive way.  We have seen great progress in previous challenges, because we are in it together and focusing on being healthier and living better lives.

Some of the terms used to report our weight:

USW - ultimate starting weight - the heaviest weight when you began to lose

SW - starting weight for this challenge

CW - current weight for the day you report in

GW - goal weight for this challenge, for Halloween

UGW - ultimate goal weight that you intend to reach eventually

Some people also include their height, their age, their BMI.

All  you need to do to join, is start posting, usually with some of the weight information.

I'm very excited about continuing with this wonderful group of people and meeting some new folks too.

The activity that seems impossible today, will soon be your warm-up

Thank you, @ThatGreen and @_Lilac_! I now remember setting up my food plan about a year and a half ago. I had mine set on hard, too, which allows me to loose 2 lbs/week. I just re-visited it. It was a good refresher. Thanks for your help!

I am thankful that my scale seems to be moving downwards again.

To health for all of us!

@HeartBiller I wanted to take a few uninterrupted minutes to respond to your post about your weekend. I have a dog in the recliner with me and the second one is bugging my daughter in the other room, so I might be successful.

You are surrounded by bad food options and activities that incorporate food! I can understand your weekend dilemmas. As we've mentioned before, taking your own snacks with you might actually help in those situations because you KNOW there's going to be food everywhere you go.

Your friend who is about to have surgery, that's the one who said you made her sick by being 'good'? Wow, she feels so out of control and bitter, so poorly about herself because she can't do what you can. I do feel for her, but that surgery isn't going to help her one bit because she isn't in the head space to fix the 'cause'.  Keep setting your goals. Keep up the good work. As people have said to me over the last day, I can just set an example but can't help those who aren't ready to help themselves.

I'm glad you won those battles on the weekend. Every bit helps in reaching your goals and motivating you to keep going. Your enthusiasm in your post was so evident! yay for you!!

@TT_is_me, I am the praying type, too, and I commit to pray for you. Keep us posted.

I heard once that depression is anger turned inwardly. See if you can turn it outwardly and work it out through some fast walk or other physical activities. Maybe, get angry at this "weight thing" and decide to love yourself and take care of your body. Just a thought...

In the meantime, I will be praying for you and your husband, and trust that the Lord will help you work things out and renew your commitment to love and respect one another.

Be strong, my friend! God is with you and for you!

WOW, @TT_is_me! You made such a huge progress! Your goals for this challenge also look great. I'll keep an eye on you, and try to reach your step goal (wink!). I've never done 70K/week!

Blessings and strength!

Good morning to all. Well today I have a Dr. appointment with my primary care Dr. I am pleased as to where I am, but I am hoping she is pleased as well. I do have this small inner voice that keeps praying please let me be at the 50 pound loss on her scale as well. I know yesterday I was at 53.6 on mine, but that is first thing in the morning before eating or drinking and my appointment today is not until 3:30. So if I factor in the difference in scales, eating two meals and drinking 70 ounces of water before I weigh on her scale...Shew makes me nervous. It really is a hope and prayer for me. lol. BUT either way I am happy and won't fuss about what ever it says...BECAUSE, I know it won't say anything like it said 4 months ago.. SO anyhow enough on that!

@_Lilac_Thank you for my video and sound. It did play and was super cute. Thanks so much! I am super proud of where I am today verses one year ago. I know for us all it is so different an we all lose at different rates of time and choose to do different things to get the weight off, but for me I am super happy and am looking forward to getting the rest of the weight off. (I honestly need to focus on toning so flab, BUT..lol) One day at a time! Oh and regarding my friend... I couldn't agree with you more and I have tried talking to her about it, but as we all know, we can only do so much! She says she will change her eating habits when it happens, but I told her the next 3 months could make the world of difference for her and she might would even decide the surgery isn't needed, but she thinks it is a quick fix. I was telling her about another friend who had and isn't losing near as much as most do because she can eat things she shouldn't.(ice cream & cake icing) but she just says oh, I wouldn't do that. I will follow the plan they give me, so I say, well follow it now and in 3 months you would realize you don't need the surgery..lol. I got no where... BUT like you, I try to just be the example.

@Ava_@Bogdel@ThatGreenand anyone I missed... lol. Thank you all for your kind words!

@HeartBiller  My sister's good friend decided she needed the surgery because she was getting married and wanted to look great, etc etc. I think it was required for 6 weeks before surgery all she could consume were these horrible shakes provided by the surgeon. No food. She was so determined to get the surgery to fix her weight problem that she did the shake routine exclusively for the weeks and weeks before the date. She lost 35lb or something. So...if one can make such a drastic change in order to get the surgery, why can't the same person make easier changes to lose the weight by themselves and not have to resort to the surgery? Hahaha. Make sense? And the wedding is over, food is back, weight is back and voila...no lesson learned. *shrug*

Ok, I'm perfect, you are perfect. We don't make mistakes...ever. *chuckle* It's easier to see things from a distance than when you feel the desperation IN the situation. I really do hope everything will turn out well for her and she makes the best decision for herself. It is about personal choices and how we feel we can best take care of ourselves. Some people feel there is no option and it's the only way to force themselves to stop the consumption.

Oh, and good luck at the doctor!! I will send vibes to that scale, insisting it weigh you light. Can you ask to get weighed stripped down?? hahaha.

@HeartBiller,

Thinking of you today, as you go to the doctor. Clothes and water do add to our weight, but you can still tell the dr. about your morning weight, can't you. I am sure that even if the scale shows a bit more, the dr. will still be pleased about your progress.

Best wishes!

@Bogdel  @_Lilac_  Thanks for the vibes as I am doctoring today.. I do have a "small" advantage, I do always weigh with my clothes on when I count it for the challenges. My husband says I am crazy and maybe I am, but I weigh at home in the morning, just to keep a log for myself. Then I weigh at my office for the challenges..lol. it is always a 3 to 4 pound difference, but it is all good, I know it is coming soon..lol.

Great day so far! I went to my water aerobics class this morning. After 20 min I get very bored but I keep at it. I can do a 50 min walk with Mom and the time goes by so fast because we are just talking and talking but in the pool alone, it's just doing exercises. I need to zone out and think of something else or it just seems like it is taking forever. I had to be very careful moving my leg/knee in the water. It did hurt but the rest of the day has been pretty good. 5800 steps by the time I walked home from the pool. I did sit for a few hours today but then decided my butt needed to move so I took the dogs for a longer walk than usual. I'm at 8800 steps and counting.
Food is great. I've had about 90oz of fluids but I must admit some of that is coffee. LOL. I have consumed only about 500 calories today and fitbit is telling me to eat about 2000 more...sigh. It's impossible! I'll do some more walking later on the treadmill or outside by myself or something. And supper...I'll need a decent sized supper.

I hope everyone is doing well today, full of energy, eating all their veggies and having their water. Do something fun today!

@mondoruby, Welcome aboard. Looks like you have a great "ultimate Goal". What is the goal for this challenge?

Best Answer

I got 10,000 steps in yesterday!! I haven't done that for a long time so I was very happy about it, especially since my weight jumped up 2 lbs this week. It was a nice day and I spent a lot of time going through clothes for the change of season and doing some yard work, plus my 30+ minute walk.

I hope that I see results soon on the scale.

Good morning to all... Thank you @_Lilac_ & @Bogdel. Your good vibes worked..lol. I got a good report at the doctor yesterday and YAY, by her scales I was 53 pounds down in the last year. I was so super excited. She was very pleased and did agree after my next appoint which is 2 months, (When my labs are due) that if all labs come back good, I could graduate to a 6 month appointment...lol. I feel like a kid graduating from kindergarten..lol. So I have to keep up the good work and pray all labs are good in 2 months so I can get this graduation.lol. My husband also got a good report. He has lost 37 pounds in the last year, so she did rub it in a tad that I was beating him and that it was a surprise to her, as men generally lose better than women... lol. He did admit that I work a lot harder at it then he has. So he says he is going to get back on track on continue with me. I am hoping he does. I don't nag him about it, but do gently nudge, since he is a diabetic... I do want to keep him around a long time... lol.

Okay, I guess I shared enough excitement about my appointment..lol. I need to get in gear and start getting some of this work on my desk done..lol.

I hope you all have a wonderfully blessed day!

@Bogdel -  I feel like this depression I'm facing is a frustration about issues that have continued for years. As they go unresolved, despite trying really hard to work on them, I have started to give up hope and just try to numb the pain. Unfortunately, as I numb the bad, the good usually gets numbed too. Motivation has been really hard recently and I'm trying to keep up with going to the gym 3 times a week to my classes that I enjoy.  My husband and I are going to start going to a counselor soon so hopefully I can learn some better coping mechanisms 🙂 Thanks for your support and prayers.

@GettingfitinSC - Thanks, hun, for your support. Trying to find a healthy balance between working on weight loss and working on other self care is tricky. I've heard a lot of you talk about trying to care for sick loved ones or overcoming major medical setbacks and it always gives me hope. You're stories also give me a kick in the butt to keep working hard at this all 🙂

@HeartBiller -  Girl... thanks for being a listening ear. The personal message you sent privately helped a lot. I'll respond soon I swear. I feel like your weight loss stories with your husband have helped me put some of my struggles with my husband's weight loss journey. Thanks again!

YAY!!! @HeartBiller  Fantastic!!! I'm happy for you, and also that your husband is going to join you in making more effort. It is sooo important in your ability to control whether you both stop for fast food or not. If he's on the bandwagon it will be so much easier.

I went walking with mom, did some shopping and organized a messy pile of yarns that were taking up space in my livingroom. I got one of those big bins and stashed them in that. My daughter is taking a bed from the basement room when she moves out so I will now have a workout/craft room!!! I'll get my treadmill moved down there, put a table, my yarn bin, a recliner, all my art/painting supplies. Now, my focus will be on getting the energy (mental energy) to do all this. A normal person would organize/clean a room in an hour or two. It will take me all week. As mentioned before, I'm not the best housekeeper and I have a mental block when it comes to this sort of thing. It's WORK. And I get frustrated because I have so little storage, which means I am forced now to throw things out, and it's so wasteful, but there's nowhere to store things in order to donate them later...and then I just give up and leave it as is. But I really really need to do this.

I was talking to Mom earlier about the possibility of getting new kitchen counters and flooring. My house was built in the 1950's and it's all original cupboards and someone thought it was a good idea to put floor tiles on the counter with huge grout lines and then pound on them with a hammer. Original linoleum tiles on the floor. Floral. *smacks forehead in dismay* I need a replacement fridge...omg I'm freaking myself out.

I got some nice fresh veggies at the store, a chicken on sale (now in the oven), strawberries, and I'm planning a nice lunch and supper. I was down to 296lb this morning. When I get to 290, I'll go see the doctor to get on her scale in victory! I never want to see 300 ever ever again.

Here is to a great day!!!

Thank you everyone who had some kind words, starting my training for my
second job today and started a new sleep schedule where I sleep in and not
worry about getting steps or workout in the morning, going to try and shift
it to the evening.

My family has a meeting with doctors in the ICU today for my grandpa. My
mom is freaked out but I am trying to see it as a chance to get questions
answered and hopefully a real update on his future care. We will see though.

My weight is up to 156, considering my eating has been terrible and my
activity levels have been terrible, it isnt a surprise. However I am hoping
with all the changes/stressors I will begin to find my groove and figure
out when my working out can happen and when I will get to eat and or meal
preps needed.

Oh, @HeartBiller, I am so happy for you! Congratulations, again!

About your husband: is he aware that he could totally reverse his diabetes through diet and exercise? I have a couple of good resources that helped me, and I'd be happy to share if he is interested.

Keep it up, friend!

Blessings and strength!

@TT_is_meLife will throw the worst at you to see if you can take it. Please fight back and push your way into the strong woman you know is inside you waiting for you to let her out. Marriage has no instruction manual for every situation, but try to listen as much as you talk, laugh as much as you cry, be a best friend, admit when you are wrong and never lie to each other.  Often if one partner is on a journey to make their selves feel better then it can make the other feel left out and that the new you is going to leave.  I have seen this happen with my cousin who took up line dancing, lost 50 lbs and left for some guy she met in the class. If he isn't on the journey with you then try not to take time from him too often to fix your meals and workout, try to do that when he is at work or doing his thing. Maybe you can compromise and work out a schedule together so he feels that you want to be with him as much as possible. I'll pray for you and that the situation gets worked out.

Finished my treatment for my liver yesterday and met with the specialist at Dartmouth . All we can do now is wait for test results and check it again in 3 months to make sure it is still healthy. So great to be off the meds even though they will hang around in my blood for about another week. Was Horrified to learn my new Weight.

USW 130

CSW  128

CW   128 with 2 lbs of clothes

My  weight went up 7 lbs in a week. My RHR went from 63 to 75 this week I feel like I will never get rid of the weight even though I know it's from the meds  and should start coming off now it is making me crazy.

Today Nora and I walked 5.29 miles and 5 floors ,had 13 peak, 97 cardio, and 21 fat burn in 11,900 steps. We got 122 active minutes , but Nora got more because she saw a friend and they ran around and played for 15 minutes while the owner and I ran around keeping the 20 ft leads untangled. So we were out for 2 hours so that Nora could scent deer, rabbit and whatever her bluetick nose caught a whif of. Hope everyone meets their goals today. Now I have to figure out how many calories my other workouts are burning.
