South Beach Dieters using fitbit

I had success on the SBD once before and just started again today with Phase 1.  Is there anyone else doing SBD who is interested in some support?

Hi,

What exactly is the South Beach Diet? I am possibly interested in doing this and having someone to bounce ideas off and being a support.

Thanks,

Tessa

Hi Teresa.

It is a healthy eating lifestyle that is broken down into 3 phases.  The first phase is the most strict and lasts for two weeks.  It for the most part eliminates fruit, bread, high carb things, refined sugar things, alcohol, and is meant to help eliminate carb cravings.  It has the greatest weight loss quickly and I started losing inches last time.  Phase two is for continued slower permanent weight loss.  It is when you gradually add back fruit and health carbs to find your body's carb tolerance.  Phase 3 is maintenance.  I downloaded the SBD book on my ereader and really enjoyed reading it.  There are two versions one is the original and one is a gluten free diet.  I do the original.  I hope this helps give you enough information to decide if you want to look into it or not.  If you decide on SB I will happily offer support as I will need it too.  Whatever you you decide I wish you the best of luck! I am just getting back to my diet and exorcise plans after being of the wagon for a couple plus years.

Thanks Debbie for the suggestion.  Right now I am doing just fine with what I am doing.  I actually imporved my overall health and metobolic numbers while on SBD the last time.  I am going to stick with what my doctor ordered and has worked for me thus far.

I hope I didn't offend you by recommending a book.  I wasn't suggesting that SBD wasn't working for you or that you should replace SBD with the information in the book. I thought you might be interested in even more information about turning your body into a fat burning machine.  Just curious why you feel the need to revisit SBD if it worked so well for you in the past.

Not offended at all Debbie.  My doctor recommended it to me years back due to a problem with my HDL.  It did work very well for my metabolic numbers and I lost weight and inches.  My father in law was very tragically killed a little over two years ago and our lives fell apart.  It was too much for me to think about and plan for my own health.  I was just getting by and trying to keep my family functioning mentally.  We are finally getting to a place where we are moving on and taking better care of ourselves (myself and hubby).

lannidawn - I will happily be a support and need it back.  I have a grand total of 80 pounds to lose (down to 75) to get to the goal that the charts say I need to be.  I will decide as I go where I feel best.

What phase are you on?  I am finishing day 2 of phase 1 (began 1/1 so that I can be on phase 2 in time for my bday).

My biggest fails of the day were not as much water as I should have and I didn't get in as many steps on the fitbit as I would like.  I had way too many hours of driving and sitting at basketball games.  I did do good in that I packed my phase one dinner instead of the concession stand food I normally would have eaten in the past.

I hope all is going well on your end.

Hi Lisa,

I read up on SBD and I went grocery shopping today and plan to start the diet tomorrow. Have you started yet? I have a feeling I am going to stuggle as I will have to make two seperate meals as I have a family. Do you have this situation?

Hey Tessa.  I did start back on the 1st.  It was easier for me since I had done it before.  I don't really make two different meals.  My husband is a diabetic who needs to lose a lot of weight so he eats what I make almost always.  My kids are teens+ and they usually eat what I make as well.  I sometimes will make different sides for myself.  I try to get them to eat healthy too. I have weight to lose and quite a bit.  My 3 kids (only 2 at home) are all small and very athletic.  Here are some things I did to make it easier to get started:

- I wrote out what meals my family likes and swapped out some ingredients to make it either phase one or tow and then put each phase on a list

- I was willing to try new things

- I looked on Pinterest (recently) for some new ideas - search under south beach diet

-I keep a list of phase one breakfast and one for lunch/dinner and one for sides/snacks

- I try very hard to prepare food for the week and store in in small pre-portioned containers that I can grab and go or grab and pack etc

Here are some things I like for breakfast

I always make an iced coffee with 4 oz. brewed coffee, sugar free caramel and or vanilla syrup, & skim milk

On Sundays I cook an egg casserole for the week - this week I has egg, green chiles, tomatoes, onions.  Sometimes I have turkey sausage crumbles, egg, 2% shredded cheddar

Another one I like to do is egg, Canadian bacon, green pepper, onion, and 2% cheese

For dinner tonight I had taco salad with lettuce, extra lean ground beef with low sodium taco seasoning, tomatoes, onion, olives, 2% cheese, lite sour cream, salsa, lettuce

Last night I had a pork tenderloin with a salad - the kids added mac and cheese and fruit to their

Other things I make and keep on hand for quick things for me are - sugar free jello cups, i make egg salad, chicken salad, Greek salad, string cheese, tomato soup, chicken broth that I throw whatever veggies I have in it to make a soup, chef salad, fajitas instead of ground beef for Mexican food, ricotta creme

I will happily help anyway I can.  If you need ideas or recipes let me know.  Or if your family eats anything special that you want me to help you think of how to convert it let me know.

I will post what eat tomorrow as well.  Maybe if we both do that we can help give each other new ideas.  I am trying to also move more and that is where my fitbit comes in.

Good luck on day one!  I had to start on 1/1 so that I could be on phase 2 by 1/15 (my birthday).

we'll check in on each other again soon.  Have a great night.  I hope you are having better weather than we are.  IF I disappear we had power outage - we are expecting lots of ice over the next couple of days - take care and stay warm.

Today's Breakfast -

FF/SF Iced caramel coffee

scrambled eggs with a slice of 2% american cheese, onions, tomatoes, and 1 Tbls of 50% less fat bacon crumbles (I can't handle turkey bacon so I use this occasionally and only a Tbls at a time - its 25 cal I believe 1.5 g fat and 0 carb)

Lunch will be a greek salad and pork tenderloin

Dinner - I have not even thought about yet.

How are you doing with day 1 Tessa?

Hey Lisa,

Sorry, I found this message after your last one! Thank you for some great ideas! I plan to research some meal options and ideas as I have a list of foods I can eat, but not good at putting them into meals.

Best of Luck!!

I hope I can reply via my email notification. Please let me know if this works. If it helps I will try to post more meals as I make them. Tonight I took a French onion soup recipe and used all SB ingredients swapped out for anything not. I left out the bread and used provolone cheese. I added a salad to go with it & called that diner.

I forgot to mention.  Make sure your salad dressing has 3 grams of sugar or less.  I use a light ranch made with canola oil - Lighthouse Brand (in my store its in a refrigerated case by the produce).  I think some of the FF dressings are higher in sugar.

Have a great night!

My way of eating mirrors SB pretty closely. Mind if I join this thread? Cheers!
