Hi! I'm looking for some friends for motivation and support. I'm 51, female, and working on losing 30 lbs. My A1c is pre-diabetic so I'm shedding some weight to try and get it under control.
Anyone?

It sounds like we are working towards the same goal. I just turned 52 and got my fitbit 4 days ago. I started using it already on Thursday night. So far I love it. I have been logging my food for a few months on sparkpeople so it really was't hard to make the transition to the fitbit site. Really looking forward to seeing if I can keep with this... Encouragment - working with other that have the same goals will be really helpful. I have set a goal of 15 pounds in 12 weeks through a challenge at work. Then we are logging minutes to win a trip through the local hospital. My final goal is to lose 35 lbs. Evening are the hardest time for me to avoid snacks. Love to snack as I cook. My husband is not very good at trying new things either. Good luck tomorrow. Shooting for 10,000 steps. Iwork at an office job so I really have to work at it. Roxanne

I find watching my sodium intake helps, and the amount of water I drink. Walking is a priority for me. Over 30,000 steps achieved yesterday. Very happy about that. Walked over 11 miles down country roads in minus 23 degree weather but the wind was out of the NE at 17kms/hr. Felt more like minus 33. Walking back was better - wind at my back..... Snowed a few cms this morning, I shovel my backyard and use it for a driveway. Killed 10,000 steps just by shovelling. And then it started snowing heavy again......It is very cold up here in Northern Alberta, Canada and probably a good time for me to head out back (just had a bowl of homemade borscht and bottle of water) and split some birch wood for the fireplace. Maybe I'll just hold off until it stops snowing......

Thanks, Carol13, more like I'm inspiring myself. From January 2013 to November of 2014, I was 4 pounds shy of dropping 100 lbs. Felt really good. The rest of November 2014 and up to last week, I gained back 28 lbs. That would be due to lack of work, SAD (seasonal affective disorder), living in the bush and drinking way too much beer everytime there was an NFL game on. I have another two months of no work. Now that football is over, plenty of time to walk, chop, crank the tunes and dance around my coffee table (being that I'm living in the middle of nowhere and nobody can hear the noise). I AM BACK! I'M ON TRACK!

I turned 50 last year, and it seemed like I immediately developed a bit of a gut. (Had actually become more sedentary and was making some excessive dietary indulgences over the past year.)
Well, I got my Fitbit on Christmas --what a motivating little gadget!!! Since Christmas, I've gone from 189 (my highest weight EVER) down to 173 so far! I'd like to get down to 145. (Big motivator: I have a
Caribbean cruise planned for the end of March, and would love to feel comfortable in a swimsuit.) Biggest changes I've made were:
1) I get out of bed early and I've increased my activity (I stopped playing so much Words With Friends in bed in the morning.)
2) I went from probably 2 glasses of water/day to about 10! (I used to drink coffee all day long)
3) I've (pretty much) cut out caffeine and coffee. (I've been drinking flavored decaf tea, instead.)
4) I bought a rebounder (a mini trampoline) with resistance bands on Amazon, and have been working out 2-3x/week on it. I also do stretching excercises whenever I think of them -- many times per day.
5) Eating LOTS of dark greens/ salads and veggies. Trying to eat lots of lean protein and high fiber foods.
I also take my vitamins daily, and juice my veggies (always with ginger and lemon or lime) a few times/week.
I find that my worst temptations to snack occur when I'm at home, houscleaning or cooking. I try to counter this by slicing some fruit and eating - a little at a time - it off a small plate, along with drinking some flavored decaf tea. SkinnyGirl Lime Popcorn has been a great snack, too.
I've hit little plateaus, followed by a 2 or 3 pound loss. Funny thing, those losses were usually AFTER increasing my calories (when I least expected it.)
A Very snowy and cold winter; I can't wait for the warmer weather to return so that walking and biking will be more feasible.

I am halfway through my 59th year - yikes! Where did the time go?! I have noticed that, every two or three years since I turned 50, I gain about two or three pounds - mainly around the middle. It doesn't seem to matter how much extra activity I do. Sadly, what I have figured out, is that I need to eat less. That is the hard part, because I already cut out junk food and added more fruits and veggies years ago. The hardest food to let go has been sweets. Last fall, my doctor told me my cholesterol was getting too high and wanted to put me on medication. I said NO, and have been working very hard at eating less red meat (saturated fats) and more fish/chicken and beans. Sneaking in veggies like eggplant and fruits like kiwi so my husband won't notice has been a challenge! However, this had not resulted in a downward trend on the scales - even though people say I look like I have lost weight. I won't give up, but I WILL drink more water and choose my snacks more wisely (apples & nuts, anyone!).
I am finding a lot of inspiration from those of you who are making successful changes and are losing weight because of them. Thank you!

Supermom56 For what it's worth...I increased my protein, try to have some with every meal including snacks and have finally been able to lose some weight...22 lbs. so far since September. Throughout the years I have drunk water religiously, cut down or eliminated junk food, walked everyday and have done so many other things that are suggested and have not lost, but gained weight. I was sooooo frustrated and gave up. Along with the current shift in diet I have also increased my daily activity dramatically, with the help of fitbit which I got in October. Hope this helps and good luck to you!!

Hi I am nearly 56 and was given FitBit as a Christmas Gift.
When I last weighed myself I had lost 7kg. 28 to go.
The battery in my scales has gone flat so until I get a new one,
it is an odd type, I have no idea what is happening weight wise.
Can't see any difference but feel fitter.
Most active day was walking just over 13km and climbing 36 flights of stairs.
Today already just over 10,000 steps and 17 flights of stairs.
I do find it a challenge that all the food on here seems to be American and talks in calories whilst we here in Australia talk kilojoules, kilometres and kilojoules.
As do lots of the rest of the world.

Hi everyone!
Love reading the posts here. Its been exactly a week since I got my Fitbit. It's really motivating. I've lost 3 of those stubborn pounds - carefully watching and monitoring my calorie intake/burn. I haven't been able to get my steps in though for one reason or another (sleep problems/tiredness/sick pup). Into my second week with Fitbit, I'm really going to focus on getting those steps in - no matter what! I've been really sedentary and I suspect that contributes a great deal to my sleep issues.
Keep up the great work everyone!
