Hi! I'm looking for some friends for motivation and support. I'm 51, female, and working on losing 30 lbs. My A1c is pre-diabetic so I'm shedding some weight to try and get it under control.
Anyone?

Not really sure exactly how it works either but even just reading the posts and knowing that so many others have the same issues males you feel like you are not in it alone ☺

Count me in! I need the encouragement. I will turn 50 later this year. I used to work at a hospital and was on my feet for 12-13 hours so weight was not a problem. The minute I left that job, I started gaining wt. Hit an all time high recently and basically said to myself, No Way! There's this dress.......that looks amazing on me if my wt is down. I have a goal to get back in to that dress by my birthday. Unfortunately, right now I'm in the "discouraged" catagory of having lost 3-4 pounds the first couple of weeks, then put it back on and then gained another pound this week. Looking at the community board I guess a lot of people go through that. I'm looking to lose 20lb by May and I'm watching time get shorter. My challenge has been getting the exercise I need because of my recent work schedule. I probably need to increase my calorie burn from what fitbit says I need, cause what I'm doing now just isn't getting the job done.

Welcome Texas Nurse and everybody else who has been posting. I haven't posted in a while because I was away on business and didn't take my fitbit with me. Naturally, my weight went up 5 pounds but much of that was water weight. I took 100 mg of B-6, watched what I ate for two days, and drank a ton of water and it's gone. I just wanted to encourage everyone and urge you to stick to it. I have struggled for years to lose weight and just kept gaining and gaining. There were reasons for that (menopause, stress, sick husband, too much work blah blah blah) but I committed to using the fitbit and I have lost (drum roll) 15 pounds since January 3 when I started. I cannot believe it. I was motivated by an upcoming trip to the Caribbean and I didn't want to be a complete blob. I set a goal and I achieved it - not through fad dieting but through regular exercise and journalling my food and water ever day. The arthritis in my knees has lifted, I can fit into clothes I haven't worn in some time and I feel so much better. Because I'm 6 feet tall, people don't really notice until I've lost a good amount of weight but this week people started to notice. My husband and son have been inspired too and both of them have lost weight. I've got another 25 to go and I'm going to keep fitbitting and posting. Hang in there and keep the faith. If you get between 5,000 and 10,000 steps a day and journal your food, I guarantee you'll have results.

Welcome JenNZ. I've got arthritis and back issues too so I "feel your pain." I find the more exercise I've been getting the fewer issues I've been having with my knees. As for the back, if I do my back exercises every day life is so much more comfortable. I don't always remember though and then live to regret it. One thing a trainer at my gym told me, if you walk on a treadmill and have bad knees, it is better to walk with an incline even if you have to walk more slowly. I walk at a 3.5% incline at 3.7 m.p.h. Without the incline I was walking at 4.0 but my knees were always sore. I have also been having baths after my work out instead of showers and throwing in a cup of epsom salts and a few drops of lavendar oil (just because). I got 12,000 steps today which is a first! Keep at it and you'll see results.

Hey Ms Megan......I have an MRI scheduled for June 1st on my knee. Freezing rain here yesterday. Managed to walk 5 miles. This morning I did 6 miles. Treadmills don't cut it for me. Bad toes. Need operation on both feet. Work seasonal jobs. Seems my feet prefer the natural inclined climate. Nice hot bath (lavender) when I get back from my walk, helps me quite a bit. Get on with my day.....I worked on 10 mile a day walks, but it's not the distance as it is the time. I don't have the time. Happy to do 5 to 6 miles and still manage to get a lot of stuff done at home. Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm not in the working class. But come April, I'll be sitting in a lookout tower watching for fires for 6 months with no time off. They fly my groceries in once a month. I won't be walking as much as I will be climbing. I have never tracked anything on fitbit but my steps. I do just fine with my eating habits and not interested in all the other logs/activities. How hard is it to track what you eat? I consider fitbit a health game. I know there is 100 meters between the utility posts and it takes me 153 steps to hit those 100 meters. Now, I am hitting those posts at a step rate of 122 steps between posts. My stride has stretched somewhat. I left the house at 7:30am this morning and was back in the door at 9:20am after walking 6 miles. I'm very proud of myself and continue to excel on my walking rate. My goal is 5 miles an hour (walking). Not knocking the treadmill, whatever works for each of us, as long as we support each other and strive for success in our goals - not just with fitbit but with life.

Hi, I am 54 (wow, really?) and just got my Fitbit about an hour ago. Looking forward to losing some weight and getting more fit. Diabetes is rampant in my family and my numbers are creeping ever closer. Onward to better health!
Hi, I'll be 54 in 2 weeks and I just got my fitbit today (2-14-15). I hope we all can encourage each other to a healthier self.

Hi Antbud,
I have the same problem. Very discouraging. I have increased my activity but gain wwight if I look at food. I have written about this before asking for help but no one has commented. I'm not sure what 'diet' to try next. Hopefully we can figure out something together.

Well I know you probably dont want to hear this but I am gonna say it anyways...................you need to go get comphresive blood work, if there is something going on with your thryoid, it will not matter how much you diet or exercise. Alot of the maintenance drugs that we take at our age, defys the attempts at losing weight.
I have lost 52 lbs in almost 2 years and that was the beginning steps that I took. And the older you are, the slower it comes off unless you have something like cancer

I usually do about 80 grams of protein a day
No more than 50 grams of carbs
at least 64 ounces of water
