looking for friends - 50s and female and getting fabulous!

Hi!  I'm looking for some friends for motivation and support.  I'm 51, female, and working on losing 30 lbs.  My A1c is pre-diabetic so I'm shedding some weight to try and get it under control.

Anyone?

5 lbs in 4 weeks is perfectly fine and a sustainable pace.

Good work. It is about my pace.

No, not logging food - can count in my head how many calories I'm taking in per day.  Changing up portion sizes and number of times I consume food per day.  Start off with two egg whites every morning.  2 hrs later its no fat 35 calorie - 100 gram yogurt, 2 hrs later it's an apple, 2 hrs later is romaine lettuce with a squeeze of lemon and cracked pepper, 2 hrs later is 4 cups of raw spinach - again with lemon or lime and cracked pepper.  2 hrs later its 6-8 spears of asparagus.  I don't eat bread, butter, rice, pasta, or potatoes.  I drink skim milk and that's only in my decaf tea at night.  How can I not lose weight this way.  And let's not forget water consumption.  1 to 2 litres a day (4 to 8 cups).  Time will tell.

Stress?  I'm thinking, oh yeah, stress from jumping on the scale every day.  Felt good not to see that in the bathroom yesterday.  Talk about obsessed with weight loss.  You must've caught on with my obsession of walking 6 miles a day.  I burn over 2,500 calories a day. I am determined to walk for 31 days in March.  I need to travel 8 hrs next Tuesday, but will get up extra early and get my walk in.  I will travel back on Wednesday and I don't care how late it is when I return home, I WILL get that 6 miles in before bedtime.

Note that this obsession to walk is paying off in stronger thighs, losing some of the spare tire around my waist.  This I noticed when I tried on a jacket yesterday and could zip it up - which I couldn't do 4 weeks ago.  Might still be a little snug around the hips, but I could zip it.

Thanks for your support, Barbara.

Wow, there definately is lots of working room with your diet.
I would suggest seeing a nut who will help you out. I had to see one for six months and learned alot.

I think you may be consuming too little calories and your body is in starvation mode.

Agree with the other poster; you're not consuming enough calories, nor the right kind and your body is going to hang on to weight because it feels like you are starving it.  Contrary to popular belief, we all NEED healthy fats (avocado, nuts, ocean-caught fish, etc.).  And I think most experts say weighing once a week is sufficient.  Women's bodies naturally fluctuate with water weight daily; once a week to weigh is sufficient.

Hi Everyone,

I'm also new to the fitbit community . I find my work days are very active and I was very surprised to learn that on my non work days I'm very busy but not cardio- busy. It's been a great eye opener. Any suggestions ??

Thanks for any suggestions. Chris

59clubDi  you really need  eat more, like others have said you are starving your body and it is just holding onto anything you give it, if you really want to alter your diet that much a nutritionalist is the way to go -- from your photo you don't seem to have a weight problem, i am needing to lose 70lbs but it has to be done slowly or it will just come back and i am taking 1500 calories a day but that is becuae the body needs fuel to just operate properly and keep nutrients in it, don't hurt yourself just to try to lose some weight your health is not worth it

Hiya, I am 50 and am looking at losing 20 kgs, I have always struggled with my weight and I am feeling that NOW is the time to crack this issue, as being overweight seems to be such a huge negative in my otherwise pretty awesome life!

I am very blessed to have 3 great children who are all making their way in the world as good citizens, they are aged 23, 21 and 19, only the 19 year old daughter lives at home still, the other 2 have careers that mean they live in different parts of New Zealand. I also have a great marriage to a good man, we have been married for 21 years this May. We were all born and bred in England, but have lived in New Zealand for 11 years, and love it!

Enter fitbit. So far it is really helping me stay focused and I am losing the weight required before surgery. I would love some help on my journey Woman Very Happy

I agree about needing the healthy fats in walnuts, salmon and advocados as well as whole grains.

Starvation mode is a rare condition that happens over time. We need 1200 calories just to run our basic body & brain functions.

When clothes are looser that is a great sign.

All the best.

Are you eating enough protein? The good thing about logging is that is calculates your carbs, sugars, proteins.

Hi chb

If you are getting in your steps being busy cardio doesn't burn as much fat as right below cardio. Cardio burns more calories but fat burning zone uses more fat as in belly fat.

Welcome  Caro

Logging food each thing you eat is eye opening. Try to take 10,000 steps each day.

Best wishes from across the pond.

Welcome,

You are absolutely right about lifestyle change as a % of pt. of bariatric surgery regain weigth 2 yrs. later. Check out Joel Fuhrman's website for weight loss ideas. Log everything you eat and keep an eye out for emotional or stress eating. When stressed or upset write it out before eating. Walk, dance, zumba, bike anything active. Non starchy veggies are nutritious, filling and low cal, so they are your friends. Avoid processed foods completely. Salad can be the main meal just add some beans. You are not alone and may find that you can reduce portions, get over addictions and not need the surgery. I would only get a band and not let any one remove part of my small intestine which absorbs nutrients that are needed and where 70% of your immune system is. Read and educate yourself well.

Wishing you the best.

Hi Barbara.  Yes, I'm eating protein - over 100 grams a day, I failed to mention that as part of my diet/eating habits.  I eat fresh haddock, sole, cod and salmon.  I also eat boneless/skinless chicken breasts.  Sometimes I cook them on their own, or throw in with my romaine lettuce (along with 4 or 5 crumbled up croutons).  I also tire of raw veggies and will saute them in a wok with some coconut oil and add various herbs/spices for flavour.  I'll also fry up a slice of bacon, crisp, pat dry, and crumble into my romaine lettuce.

Every food item I have mentioned above and past is what I ate all summer last year and lost just over 25 lbs.  I never walked at all last summer.  I used a mini stepper for 15 minutes a day.  The weight loss was great - 1 to 2 lbs per week.  As it should be.

If my picture looks like I don't need to lose weight, it's because it was taken near the end of summer where I weighed in at 166 lbs., after weighing in the previous year at 256 lbs.  I spent October in Costa Rica where I lost another 6 lbs. in 3 weeks.

Once I got back home (Canada), I gained back 26 lbs. I'm back on track and if I'm hungry, I eat, believe me.  I eat unsalted almonds, avocadoes in my salad.  I have bagged and frozen fresh strawberries, blueberries, (which I dice up and throw on top of my yogurt),  bell peppers........I eat canned tuna (in water), half a small can on a side plate with a sprinkle of 2 croutons over top.  To me, it's all about the presentation - makes it more appetizing.  I'm sorry if I've mislead posters.  But I do eat well, and it is winter and I know the weight will come off once the warm weather comes around.

Thank you all for your comments and support.

Dianne 🙂

Hiya, nice to hear from you! I have started logging my food, and did my 10 000 steps yesterday, so feeling good. I went out for  (fairly short and rather slow) run yesterday for the first time in ages which was an achievment, and I went for a short walk mid-morning at work instead of going to the canteen for a muffin!! Have to say I am looking forward to my lunch (bought some homemade pumpkin soup) right now!
