Hello! My name is Jackie and I live in Lebanon, Indiana. I need to lose about 50 pounds or more, but I have had a hard time getting into walking again. I had started walking, but ended up with Covid back in February, and ever since recovering from that I haven't been able to get back to walking. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, so I really need to start doing something. Does anyone have some inspiring words to help push me out the door to start walking? My doctor wants me to do weight watchers, but I don't live in an area where there are meetings, and I've been trying to do it online, but thet's not working out. I do like close to a YMCA, but it's so darned expensive, although I haven't checked to see if they have discounts for seniors. My health insurance doesn't cover it, so I can't depend on them. As for my favorite guilty pleasure, I can name a few, pizza, chocolate, and cherry pie!! Any suggestions you can give me to get me motivated again would be helpful.

Hi Jackie. So sorry to hear you were ill.Check out the YMCA again.I used to work at one.Ask to speak or email directly with the person who gives "sponsorships" or reduced fees.Yes,there is a special rate for seniors. Also,i believe if you volunteer for 2 hrs/week then you get to use that specific Y for free (but still must pay for classes). If the Y stands up to its mission statement then let them work with you to find a way you can afford it.They have Heartwise programs and are very community oriented. I also have heart issues and will send you a friend request. One step at a time.Barb W

Hi @JackieM65 !
First, you have come a long way already. You are almost out the door. Which Fitbit device do you have? I am not a fan of counting calories if we can avoid it. Weight watchers? As you say expensive. Find healthy recipes online. You pay for being weighed in front of others so they can applaud you. I promise our digital applause will be way more fun.
It is getting late actually, 1 a.m.
You are not going to starve, we are not taking away your guilty pleasures,
You know what Jackie? You will soon be slimmer and healthier.

@JackieM65 , who says you have to run to get a pulse from walking? Are you familiar with Nordic walking? Nordic walking involves regular walking, but with the use of long poles like ski poles. An excellent form of exercise, Nordic walking is designed to work out your upper extremities and core muscles to a higher degree by using poles alongside normal walking sequences. Sounds good, right? And there is more to Nordic walking. It will help you to keep your balance. When you feel safe and confident you won't fall, you can increase your walking speed. After 6-8 weeks you can shorten the sticks and start walking in more steep terrain. with an increase in heart rate, and without fear of falling.

@lynnedavies1156 @JackieM65 , he he I guess you pictured winter? It is an all-year activity, winter as well as summer and "Tropical Norway". I am not a huge fan but 32 Celsius (90 F) will hit us Sunday or Monday. As I said, not a fan, but it happens every summer, so what choice do one have😃😉
