Steps targets for 2022

I thought I'd start a new thread on this, rather than putting with my other posts in the Lifetime Steps discussion.

I'm aiming to do 15,000,000 steps this year, which would be a new record for me, and I don't think it's going to be easy!  I need to average 41096 daily steps, and January is usually my worst walking month, with English winter weather for one thing, and also starting with zero steps in the bank.

I'll try to post in here after each complete week, so here's my first report:

Week 1 (January 1-7 inclusive):  297899 steps - daily average 42584

I invite anyone with a target for the year in mind to put it on here - best of luck to everyone!

Took it slightly easier this week, the first below 300000 since Week 1.

Big change in the weather - quite a bit of rain, with occasional snow and hail, but also some sun.  Much colder, especially early morning and late night.

I want to start doing something. it's very hard for me to start after two years of not doing anything. My job was remote and now I also make money sitting at home on the couch. I need some kind of incentive.

Hi @FoxMan32 .  Do you know at all what sort of something you want to start?  Are you able to walk a bit?  That's a really good thing to do on a regular basis.

Week 16

April 16 - April 22

288325 steps - daily average 41189

Overall

4,965,982 steps - daily average 44339

Daily average needed for 15M target 39660

Weather mainly dry, but not as warm as last week.  Fewer steps this week as we were boating on the canals, which left less time for walking, although it was nice to have the variety, and the flatness for a change!  Unfortunately, I had felt a bit off-colour, and tested positive for Covid when I got home.  I think I'm well over the worst of it, and the restrictions are nothing like as arduous as at first, so it shouldn't affect my step count.

318794 steps - daily average 45542

Overall

5,284,776 steps - daily average 44410

Weather dry, not very windy and still rather cold.  Tested negative for Covid this morning (30th) and had felt quite a bit better by the 29th.

Week 18

April 30 - May 6

314271 steps - daily average 44896

Overall

5.599.047 steps - daily average 44437

Daily average needed for 15M target 39335

Weather getting warmer by the end.  Quite a bit of sun, not that much wind, a little rain.

April statistics:

Total steps in April: 1,306,145 (new PB for April)

Daily average in April:  43538

Week 19

May 7 - May 13

313418 steps - daily average 44774

Overall

5.912,465 steps - daily average 44455

Daily average needed for 15M target 39170

Weather a bit cooler on the whole.  Generally dry, some sun, winds light to moderate.

Closing in on 6 million, so I'm on a bit of a push to get past that by the end of May 15th, to make it 23, 22, 23, 22, 23, 22 for the six millions so far this year.  If I can keep up 23-day millions, then that brings into play the prospect of 16 million for the year.  We'll see!

Week 20

May 14 - May 20

308251 steps - daily average 44036

Overall

6,220,716 steps - daily average 44434

Daily average needed for 15M target 39019

Weather variable in temperature.  Sunshine and showers.  More challenging to keep up the numbers this week, as we were canal boating, so it was harder to get the walks in as well.

Got past 6 million on May 15th, so the potential target mentioned in the last post is still hovering in the back of my mind.

Week 21

May 21 - May 27

326768 steps - daily average 46681

Overall

6,547,484 steps - daily average 44541

Daily average needed for 15M target 38773

At the moment, I'm having a go at 16M for the year.  I need an average of 43313 steps per day to get there, so the current strategy is to make the most of the long daylight hours to get that figure down.  Realistically, the next four months - i.e. up to the end of September - will determine whether I can do it.  Getting the daily target below 43000 is the first step.

Another pretty dry week - distinctly cold for late May!

Great job @Vidd! You are really having some big step days! What is your day like to get in all those steps?

My goal for the year is 5M steps and as of yesterday, May 30th, I am at 2,024,392. I need to average about 14K steps per day to make the goal. I moved this month and won't have my treadmill until middle of June so my steps have taken a nose dive this past week. Hoping to step it up for the month of June. I'd like to end June at the halfway mark to 5M, so I basically need a solid 480K steps for June (16K steps per day).

Thanks, @Heather-S!  My days follow a regular pattern most of the time, linked with my dog's love of the outdoors.  Up reasonably early, and a good walk before breakfast of up to 10,000 steps.  Breakfast tastes miles better that way!  After lunch, say from about 1:30, a long afternoon walk - usually three hours or sometimes a little more - doing 21,000 to 24,000 steps.  Next call is after supper, and similar in length to the morning walk, so another 10,000.  Little trips into town for shopping are useful for another three or four thousand.  My dog does nearly four times the amount of steps that I do if he's walking beside me, so at least that if he's running free.  He would get over 100 million in a couple of years!

Good luck with your interim target.  I find that's a very helpful way of progressing.  With the nice long days at the moment, there's greater scope for getting out, so I hope you can get a good rhythm of 16K days going.

Wow, that's a lot of walking @Vidd. Your dog must be very fit too!

That would be hard to do here. I've been running in the mornings, but here in Florida, it's already 70F and 97% humidity when I go for my runs at 6:30am. I've been running only about 30-45 minutes and that gets me about between 5,500 and 7,100 steps on average. Later in the day, the humidity goes down, but the temperature goes up. It's about 1:15pm and it's 86F (real feel of 92) and "only" 60% humidity, but the temperature is pretty brutal for running and I can only take walks in the afternoon.

He's a border collie (slightly crossed a few generations back, we think, so possibly a Welsh sheepdog) which means he's built for going all day.  I think he probably would if asked to, but he also knows how to rest up.

I can see the problems you face, @Heather-S with that sort of climate!  I'd definitely struggle in that sort of heat, and would have to carry plenty of water.  Is it because of the heat and humidity that you have a treadmill?

Best Answer

@Vidd Ah yes, border collies love activity! Sounds like you two are best buddies! I have a husky, but he's really old (14 years) and can't walk very far anymore. Our labrador loves to chase the ball, but isn't a fan of walking. She'd rather play fetch!

I originally got the treadmill when we lived in Oklahoma. The winters were too cold and had the risk of ice. I definitely prefer the warm, hot, humid weather, but it does make for a lot of sweating! I'll still probably use my treadmill here in Florida just so that I can run faster and further than I can outside given the humidity.

Until I saw this, I hadn't considered setting a yearly goal. Just a daily goal! So thank you for the inspiration.

My goal is 5,500,000 steps. About 15,000 per day, I think!

Excellent, @thisisfit_leigh!. Keep us posted on here, please. 🙂

You need 15,069 per day - 105,480 per week.  Good luck!
