I only wear my fitbit when exercising.  I don't wear it while sleeping.  Why does my fitbit display approximately 300 calories burned first thing in the morning?

Fitbit includes BMR (basal metabolic rate) calories that you are always burning just by being alive.  These are always credited, even for when not wearing the tracker.
