One possibility: if you were holding hand rail part of the time with Fitbit hand, those steps probably were not counted because the Fitbit was not swinging as in walking. Distance is calculated as stride length times number of steps, so if step count is too small, distance will be short.
@Bob514 there is another thing about treadmills to consider. Treadmills measure their distance by the number of belt revolutions times the length of the belt. Fitbit uses steps times stride length. We reflexly change our stride length when we change the speed. We do this to stay in the middle of the deck. This will definitely interfere with a Fitbit calculation.

This would be fixed if we could edit the distance for treadmill activities in the Fitbit app afterwards.
