I had the dark screen issue on my fitbit charge 3. I found a magnifying glass and went in a dark room so I could read the faint display with the magnifying glass. I went to the settings and then to About where I could reboot without loosing saved settings. That did the trick, in fact, the display is brighter than it was before it went dark.

Similar story here. I was in the habit of rebooting my Charge 3 and that never restored the brightness. I got so frustrated that I bought a Versa 3 to replace it. When I went to About and reset the Charge 3 to remove personal data the brightness was restored. Just like your experience, it was brighter than ever. Sounds like some of the saved settings are getting corrupted and there may be multiple bad areas.
Glad you got your's working.
