I removed the charge 5 from the app and put the charge 3 back on the app and now when I sync I lose steps..

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you experienced with your Fitbit Charge 3. Thank you for the information provided.
Whether your Fitbit account is connected to a third party app or if you have manually logged an activity on your Fitbit account, please make sure the information in both cases doesn't match the time you were wearing your Fitbit device otherwise it could overwrite your data.
If the information above is not related to your case, please restart your Tracker, remove it from your Fitbit account and set it up as a replacement device:
