I had that difficulty at first also, check to see if your fitbit is in sleep mode or dim. While wearing and checking statis I was changing dim mode by putting fitbit on sleep mode. Also my fitbit is hard to see it direct sunlight.
n the Charge 3, swipe to the left until you see the "Settings" app. Tap on "Settings" and Brightness Settings should be your first option. Tap on "Brightness" to cycle through the options. You only have three options for brightness: dim, auto, and normal.
