Charge 3 tracking too many steps

I got my Fitbit charge 3 as a gift for Xmas and I’ve noticed that the step counter is way off! 
it’s adding 1000s of steps on that I know I haven’t done! It seems to add steps when I’m just sat on the couch. I’ve tried resetting it and all my personal info is correct such as height and weight etc. I’m thinking of taking it back and choosing a different make altogether as I’m really gutted that it doesn’t do as expected. Is mine faulty or is there something I’m doing wrong ?
