I was getting this error message and couldn't believe it not staying sync like my Alta 2 that I was spending too much time trying to figure it out. I put charger 3 on the charger and turned it off.  I went through and shut off all devices that we use bluetooth. I deleted the charge 3 from my app.  I did a "reset"not a  factory restore but the reset that all apps are defaulted to original.  After turning Galaxy S8+ back on I checked the bluetooth, then added my charger 3 back.  But when I tried to pair I was in despair! My charger 3 was showing connected but not to my phone but to my tablet. Remedied that.  Paired charge 3 to my phone and message asked me if I wanted to add my Fitbit to "Smart Lock." Once I added it to "Smart Lock" it stayed connected for three days!  I was in seventh heaven, then in cleaning my bedroom, an item fell from my dresser onto my charge 3 and put a big crack in corner in a half circle.   I've put "Gorilla repair tape across the corner, but so disappointed that it was that easy to break! They say they will not accept back damages, so stuck ok n not being able to wear swimming or I would not have given up my Alta 2.

Okay, for those of you using Android and having sync issues. This is a bug, but here is a temporary work around until (hopefully) Fitbit fixes it.

If you have been restarting the phone and getting your Charge 3 to sync, you can do this work around instead and it'll get it to sync without needing a complete restart.

  1. When you close out of the Fitbit app, it apparently keeps running on your phone. Open Settings --> Apps --> Fitbit and press the "Force Stop" button.
  2. Reopen the Fitbit app now and your Charge 3 should sync properly.

This work around has been working for me and hopefully it'll work for you as well.

I own the Fitbit Charge 3 and Aria 2.

Make sure you do not have it paired to another device.  Then attach the charger to your Fitbit and push the button on side and hold down to count 8 seconds  about time needed to see the smiling face.  Then remove Chatger 3 from charging cable and turn on.  Go to bluetooth setting  in your Galaxy S8 and attempt to pair the Charger 3.  Once paired, go to settings on your phone  and add device to "Smart Lock"  Once I got mine to pair and added to Smart Lock, it does just as good as my Alta 2 HR.

Mine has been choppy about connecting from the start- frequently have to turn Bluetooth off and on then close and re-open the Fitbit app to get it to connect (with both my iPad and iphone7). This morning I woke up and it had reset itself to midnight at some point while I was asleep, then wouldn’t connect at all on either device no matter what I tried (I’ve tried everything I’ve read online).

I had the first version of the Charge several years ago, with no problems (aside from the band breaking twice). However, this thread (or much of the other information I’ve read online) is not giving me confidence. Something I paid $150 for should not be having these sorts of problems within two weeks of purchase.

Planning to return it ASAP and look at Garmin or Apple.

Well, I've updated and all the rest.  The FitBit Charge 3 is going back.  I don't know which other brand I'll get.  Maybe I'll just keep the Charge 2.  The Fitbit Charge 3 will not sync on my Android phone, no matter what I do.  It finds it, updates the firmware.  The software finally locks up on the phone.  I kill it, go back, won't sync.  I've done more things.  I'm not fooling with it anymore.

I'm sure yours works, and it never gives you a problem.  I'm happy for you.

Update: I don't know what happened, but it has now started working.  The symptoms above are accurate, but later, I noticed it was indeed syncing up after the update.  So, I am keeping it for now.  Used it on a run, and it seems to be working well.  I hope it continues.

Hi guys! I'd like to give thanks for the feedback you've provided towards our product. Rest assured that our engineers and product development team use this information to further improve our products and services.

If you're still having difficulties updating your Charge 3, I'd recommend trying the following:

  1. Restart your Charge 3
  2. "Remove" the tracker from your account inside of the Fitbit app.
  3. "Forget" the tracker from your phone's Bluetooth settings (along with any other Fitbit devices paired to your phone)
  4. Try the update again.

As mentioned here, the latest firmware version is 1.31.93.

For syncing difficulties, please see: Why won't my Fitbit device sync?

On a side note, I'd like to say thanks to @vemerce for sharing a workaround that seems to be helping some of you lately. If you haven't tried it yet, please give it a shot and let us know if that does the trick for you too.

Hope this helps!

Mine seems to be syncing most of the time but there are gaps when the devise won’t pair. However w my iPhone the described workAround of deleting and reinstalling did not work. In fact, once I deleted my first charge 3 it never paired again. I got a second one and returned the first and am just monitoring it and dealing with the inconsistent quality,

Bottom line - what is the ETA for updating so that the product works without error?

After spending hours trying to get my Charge 3 to sync with my S8 I'm done. I've been a loyal customer of Fitbit since their first wearable, but now Fitbit has lost a customer and I will not recommend their devices. If their products can't work with flagship devices like the iPhone X, S8, etc. at launch, and reliable procedures don't exist to pair their devices, then they don't get my business. Get your QA & QC folks talking with your engineering teams and maybe in a few generations I'll give you guys another chance.

What a total joke. No errors? No logs? No feedback to the customer about what the problem is or why pairing, syncing, etc., won't work? 10+ minutes sitting at "Connecting..."? Get your act together.

I do wish we had logs.  That would be invaluable.

I don't know what happened, but it has now started working.  The symptoms above are accurate, but later, I noticed it was indeed syncing up after the update.  So, I am keeping it for now.  Used it on a run, and it seems to be working well.  I hope it continues.

When I updated to the latest version of the Fitbit app, it froze several times.  When it first found the device it looked like it was working (and I believe it was), but it stayed on the paired screen.  I had to kill it.  I went back in and let it update the firmware, worried it might brick the thing.  It froze on the phone.  Killed it went back in.  It did complete the firmware update.  Went back in.  It didn't sync.

In frustration, I put it back in the box, ready to take back.  I was about to remove it from my older (two years), no name, "Alcatel," Android phone.  All of a sudden I noticed it syncing.  I thought, "Ah, the secret it to keep it in the original box."  I didn't know how I'd wear while in the box, so I decided to remove the Charge 3 from the Fitbit box and wear it.  To my surprise it synced again.  Went on a run.  Continued.  Able to change the watch face, apps, and all the rest.

I hope it is all solved.  I don't know if the program is too new for my phone, if the programming isn't quite up to snuff, or what.  My guess is they created the minimum viable for the first adopters, and they get to work out the kinks.

But logs would be nice.
