Charge 4 keeps asking to setup device

I do not own a Fitbit charge 4 but whenever I am at work I receive 50+ pop ups asking to "set up" this device. I turn off my Bluetooth and it is not showing up in my devices. How do I stop this from coming up?

also, this is not an notification, this is more of a pop up if that makes sense.

Hi everyone.

Thanks for letting us know that you're being asked to pair a Fitbit that you don't own. We've reported this experience to our teams, so that they can improve our integration with the Google Fast Pair feature.

In the meantime, you can disable this feature on your phone by visiting: Settings > Google > Devices & Sharing > Devices > Scan for nearby devices.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Your feedback and patience are truly appreciated.

See you around.

Hi @Cofre. Welcome to the Community Forums.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Just to confirm, has your Charge 4 been setup in the Fitbit app? Let me explain that even though your tracker shows up as a connected device in the Bluetooth settings, your tracker needs to be setup in your Fitbit account so your details and apps can be displayed correctly. Assuming the setup process wasn't completed, I'd recommend the following steps:

  1. Remove the Charge 4 from the Bluetooth settings.
  2. Restart your tracker with the charging cable.
  3. Open the Fitbit app in your phone.
  4. Log into your Fitbit account and tap the profile icon at the upper left corner.
  5. Tap Set Up a Device > Charge 4 and follow the onscreen instructions.

This is not the question that was asked. To clarify: someone in my vicinity has a new Fitbit charge 4 that is not affiliated with their phone or account. My phone keeps asking me if I want to set up NOT MY Charge 4. How do we end the maddening, non-stop pop-ups from Google Play Services?

Hi @akaguinevere. Welcome on board.

Thanks for clarifying that you're getting that message without owning a Charge 4. I'm sorry for this inconvenience and because this shouldn't be happening, may I know if that message appears on the Fitbit app? Or does it appear in the Bluetooth settings screen? If possible, could you take a screenshot of that message and attach it in your reply? Also, provide me with the model of your phone.

In the meantime, please remove any Fitbit device that appears in the Bluetooth settings of your phone, force quit the Fitbit app, reboot your phone, open the Fitbit app, sync your Fitbit devices and let me know how it goes.

Liz, no offense but it really feels like you don't understand the product based on your responses.

This IS supposed to be happening as part of the PreSetup process.

The fact you completely misread the first post, and then told Guinevere to uninstall an app she may not even have, sure feels like this is just bulk copy and paste drivel and not actually reading what folks are asking.

My issue is the same as Guinevere but in my case I am the owner.

We bought 4 Fitbits for all 4 members of our family.

We each have our own Android Device they were paired with.

But if I walk past a member of my family, or if I am using my Android Tablet (not the Android Phone I paired with), I get the same popup numerous times per day.

There is no option to Blacklist certain FitBit devices to prevent them from triggering this popup that I could find.

I don't know if that's an Android issue or a FitBit one, as I recall seeing this popup even before I installed the app.

Your Community forums seem to completely HATE Mobile users, at least on Android.

1) In Mobile View, the Attach a picture button doesn't even appear.

2) Once I forced my mobile browser (Chrome) to "Desktop View", the popup window for Image attachment is so wide, I couldn't even see all the buttons.

3) Now that I'm on a desktop Chrome instance, I see the buttons shown in your link above on how to attach an image don't exist at all.  Not sure if your linked post is just old or something is broken or what.

Here are screenshots of what you asked for and my issues with your Image Upload.

I sure hope this helps and you are able to give us all a way to suppress these annoying popups.

I have my Bluetooth turned off on my android phone. Someone in the apt complex got a charge 4 and now my phone keeps prompting me to set up the device. I turned off notifications, bluetooth, everything I can think of but the prompts keep popping up. How do I get this to stop? Also I do not own nor do I ever plan to own a fitbit.

I'm getting them non stop today. Haven't gotten them before.

It can not be a Google play issue it can only be a fitbit issue. My wife just bought one. This morning I started getting the pop up. I have NEVER used one nor have I EVER paired to one.

I cannot believe that your app developers thought this was a good idea. Enraging potential customers is not a good marketing strategy.

Fix this and update your devices immediately.

Finally figured it out. Go to settings, Connections and at the bottom tap More Connection Settings. Turn off nearby device scanning. Hope that helps.

Dave492 has this now gone away completely?

This has been happening to me NON STOP as well. I DO NOT own any FitBit device. I have NEVER owned any FitBit device. But someone in my apartment complex obviously owns a Fitbit Charge 4 as it shows up in my bluetooth settings as in range.

My phone's bluetooth showing a Charge 4 within range

For reference my Phone is a Samsung S20 FE 5G, Android 11, Android security patch Sept 1 2021, Google Play system update June 1 2021, Samsung One UI ver 3.1

I am going to try Dave492's suggestion of turning off nearby scanning to see if that will stop this.

Neither of the methods worked that I tried in order to post images (screenshots) in my above message.

It's blocked by your forum so old school copy and paste

OK so I found a correlation that I can 100% reproduce the problem.

I own a Bluetooth connected weight scale made by  a company that uses an app called 1byone Health. The very first time I noticed the 'Fitbit Charge 4 Tap to setup this device' pop up was when I accessed the scales 1byone app menu that includes an option to 'Sync with Fitbit'. Even though this option was turned Off, I believe this is what started generating the message in my case.

Screenshot of the 1byone app menu that includes an option to Sync with Fitbit, even though that option has always been turned off!

Even though this option to 'Sync with Fitbit' was turned off, if I accessed anything in this menu it immediately started generating the Fitbit Charge 4 pop up. I noticed the correlation earlier on, but thought it was coincidental because uninstalling the app and removing my Google permissions for the app didn't stop the pop ups. But using Dave 492's method of going to my phone's Settings > Connection Settings and turning off ‘Nearby device scanning’. It went from every few minutes to no pop ups.

But then I decided to try an experiment. I re-installed the 1byone app and reconnected the bluetooth scale. After I re-installed that 1byone app I went to that app's menu that includes the option to Sync with Fitbit (which was Off) and just toggled another item in the menu (I set a Target weight) Google Fit). Immediately it generated the 'Fitbit Charge 4. Tap to setup this device' pop-up. And here's the thing .... this time Nearby device scanning was turned Off! Once again .... every few minutes I got the pop up 'Fitbit Charge 4 Tap to setup this device'.

So I toggled Nearby device scanning back to On, & uninstalled the 1byone app again. After it uninstalled I then went back to Settings > Connection Settings and turned off ‘Nearby device scanning’. No pop ups since.

I repeated the whole process above again. same problem, same solution.

Confirmed further by repeating above process on a second device, an older Moto G Play phone. Immediately after install of 1byone app it started generating the 'Fitbit Charge 4 Tap to setup this device' pop ups. I've owned that Moto G device for five years, living in this apartment, and it has never ever before generated the message, despite the above reported problem occurring on the Samsung Phone over the last few weeks.

Further testing today, I can reproduce the pop up using other apps that are used with bluetooth weight scales.

I installed several apps associated with common weight scales, sold on Amazon, that have the ability to pair with Fitbit. NOTE: generating the 'Fitbit Charge 4 Tap to setup this device' pop up does NOT require that you enable the app's sync with Fitbit feature, only that the presence of a Fitbit device (in my case a Charge 4) is within range of your bluetooth.

Sop far the apps I've found that reproduce the pop up are RENPHO (used with RENPHO bluetooth products) and VeSync (used with Ektecity bluetooth products). Between installation of the above apps I've been factory resetting my phone first, then doing a restore from a manual back up that restores to a point before any of this started, before the installation of any of the problematic apps. That alone resolves the problem. But the point of the test is to reproduce the problem, which I can do.

Here is an example with the installation of the RENPHO app:

RENPHO app menu layout includes an option to sync with Fitbit. This option does not need to be toggled on in order to generate the  'Fitbit Charge 4 Tap to setup this device' pop up.

https://imgur.com/Qy8iHnf

It appears that merely the inclusion of an option to sync with Fitbit,  and the presence of a Fitbit device within bluetooth range, somehow triggers a launch of the 'Fitbit Charge 4 Tap to setup this device' pop up. In the case of the RENPHO app installation, it clued me in to the fact that it also uses Location. So in this case it appears that even when a phone's Settings > Connections > More Connection Settings is toggled Off, it will still generate the pop up. And in that case it requires the additional step of turning Off location in order to stop generating the pop up.

This is where my testing is at present.

I have successfully restores the phone and installed the offending RENPHO app, and am able to generate or stop the pop up by using a combination of two settings:

- Going to the phone's Settings > Connections > More Connection Settings and toggling it Off.

- Going to the phones Quick Settings > Location and toggling it Off.

For others, if the pop up is still happening, I am willing to bet that you have:

1) The presence of a Fitbit device within bluetooth range, even though it is not your device, and has never been paired with your phone.

2) Either Settings > Connections > More Connection Settings toggled On, or Location toggled On, or a combination of the two toggled On

3) Some app installed on your device that has, maybe somewhere buried in it's menu, an option to sync with Fitbit. And that option doesn't even need to be toggled On in order for your device to start generating the pop up.
