For months I have used sleep mode without an issue. Now when I do a long press and choose Sleep nothing happens. the screen does not dim and if I move my wrist the display starts. I have not made any configuration changes and have re booted the fitbit several times.

I understand how you fell about this and appreciate the troubleshooting performed. Your settings might have changed when unintentionally pressed the button, for example contact with water can behave as a button press. Sleep mode doesn't automatically turn off unless you set a sleep mode schedule. To schedule sleep mode to automatically turn on during certain hours:
You can't turn on Do Not Disturb and Sleep Mode at the same time.
