Custom Heart Rate Max do I have to adjust the "zones" and what does that mean anyway

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

I have a heart condition (CHF weak heart from stress, my resting heart rate when sleeping is in the 70;s but during the day when I am sitting or standing its typically around 85-90) so though I am doing much better I am per my cardiologist to not exceed a heart rate of 150. I have had my Fitbit charge 2 for  several months now and wasn't really adjusting the zones but I am trying to keep my data more accurate.  As it had me in Fatburn pretty much all day.

So I just made my custom max 150 as he said. What are the min and max ? I don't know what that means. It seems i am often in cardio or fatburn no matter what I am doing. Even when I am sleeping I am in fat burn now that I made this adjustment.  I am just trying to understand this better.  Advice or information appreciated as I have been searching and can't find a clear answer, the one post on here that expalined the zones wasn't relevant to me as my max is due to what my doctor said. So not sure if that changes anything

@daggs Welcome to the Fitbit Community! I hope you're doing well! Thank you for your inquiry. According to the help site the heart rate zones work this way:

WHAT ARE HEART-RATE ZONES?

Heart-rate zones can help you optimize your workout by targeting different training intensities. The default zones are calculated using your estimated maximum heart rate. Fitbit calculates your maximum heart rate with the common formula of 220 minus your age. The illustrations below provide examples for each zone. Note that the appearance of the icons may look slightly different between devices; for example, dots instead of dashes. For more information about zones, see the American Heart Association's Target Heart Rates article.

Since you have a special condition then as you said these won't really apply to you. Using the custom zone will work as follows:

CUSTOM ZONE

Instead of using the 3 default zones you can create a custom zone if you're targeting a specific heart rate. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap or click the Account icon (User-added image) and find Heart Rate Zones. Then enter your custom zone.

On fitbit.com, log into your dashboard and click the gear icon in the upper right. Choose Settings > Personal Info. There you can enter your custom zone.

Note that on Fitbit Ionic and Fitbit Versa, the heart-rate value appears gray if your watch is searching for a stronger reading.

Let me know how it goes!

But what do they mean???

I don't get it, you only explained what everyone knows about the max heart rate articles.

What is the purpose of minimum? Does that mean the lowest your heart rate goes? And Max would be the 150 for me as I am not to go above it? So why have them? Is it to know the zones of your fat burn, cardio, Peak? That's what I thought it was for.

You said something about "targeting" So if you are targeting some area for some reason?

I am using the fitbit only to monitor my heart rate and not over do it. So I can see if I am doing too much by having too many steps I can make time to rest (I am an over-doer which is how I wound up with the heart condition) I have had the fitbit or a year now and according to my heart rate graph I am usually in "fat burn" all the time, even part of my sleep. In fact, i was trying to make sure I had this accurate so when I changed the max to 150 it now has me as being in cardio for a good part of the day, but it doesn't feel that way?

I have to go back to cardiologist so I want to have information for him. I am too young to have this problem, so I am doing what I can to recover. So correct data is helpful.

Bottom line I just need to know what Fitbits purpose of the custom zones, what its for, how it relates to fatburn, peak etc. Then I can make my own decisions on how to use the information and what to enter.
