Wireless isn't always the best way. Maybe allowing people to update the firmware on their devices through the usb charging cable plugged into a computer. Managing the device through the already accessible Fitbit Connect program. Just an idea

You can do it through the Connect program
Right click on the fitbit connect logo and shoose Open main menu. Then check for device Updates

Tried that it immiately asks for me to plug in the wireless dongle. I need to use fitbit connect through the usb charging cable plugged into the back.

Welcome to the Community @CurtisE7! If you're trying to update the firmware using a computer you need to have the Fitbit connect software installed and the Wireless Sync Dongle plugged into the Usb port, then you can follow the instructions that @WendyB shared. The charging cable it is only to charge your tracker's battery not to sync it.
Keep me posted!

That's not what she's asking. She was very clear that she wants a completely wired sync option because of how unreliable and poorly the fitbit devices are to sync or update. she asked for a wired option and you've just given her an even less convenient method than just using the built in bluetooth. I came here to get answers or help before returning my device but it's clear I have no other choice.

I also would really prefer a usb wired alternative to the bluetooth syncing for my fitbit ionic. Bluetooth is buggy and unreliable compared to a wired connection.

Clearly the novelty of the brand is wearing off and they aren't interested in device support of older models.

Not really sure if they aren't supporting the Ionic but it is the trend to only do bluetooth sync with activity watches. Some brands like Amazfit Stratos only sync with bluetooth on a smartphone. In the activity tracker watch world I guess 2 years is ancient since the last Ionic release. Like I said before I prefer wired sync to a laptop or desktop computer rather than wireless. It just works better.
