GPS only tracking while app is open

The GPS tracker on my Fitbit is only working while I have the app open on my phone.

Which is a bit of an inconvenience when I’m out for a run or bike ride since it drains my phone battery a fair bit.

 

Is there any fix to this?

The app has to be running to work. That doesn't mean the screen has to be on though.
