I was about to purchase a Charge 2 because I wanted to record my heartbeat at night, but after reading this I changed my mind.
Fitbit website doesn't clearly states that the product is able to record heart rate data during sleep. They surely know about the issue you mention, but I suspect that the reason why they do not care might just be "sales optimisation".
People like you and me might not be the vast majority of customers. Most people are concerned about how long their watch lasts. I am assuming that those gaps you see at night are due to an energy saving update that has been coded in order to extend daytime usage (thus increasing sales).
What they are missing though is that they could increase sales even further by simply allowing the user to select the type of behaviour of the watch at night.
And make us happy too!

I have been having this same issue. I purchased the Charge 2 because I was assured it monitored your sleep stages and it is not working now. I was upset because one rep basically sent me an email saying everybody's body is different so I went to a manager and hopefully she is helping me. I had a functioning Charge HR but was told the Charge 2 tracks REM and DEEP. I only purchased it for sleep only. I know they are not accurate 100% but I would like an estimate. I have slept on my hand many times and it still tracked it. It is frustrating. Now it reverted back to the old sleep tracking system and says it can't get a good heartbeat reading.

If you move into a position and your wristband is loose enough that the Fitbit falls away from your wrist, it will not record your pulse rate.

To Run Betty,
That’s really interesting. So glad you are recovered!

Actually the tracker not working while sleeping and my Garmin Running watch were two things that alerted me that I had skipped beats (PVCs). the tracker only picks up the strong beat and not the premature beat before it so it shows as irregular therefore won’t track your sleep patterns. My running watch did similar and would show I
had a pulse of 40 when I was jogging! I had an EKG and then they showed.
