Trackers on your wrist detect steps from the normal swinging of your arms when walking. When your wrist is held steady as in pushing a baby carriage or shopping cart, or holding hand rail on treadmill, often steps are not detected. Someone said they got steps detected by using an underhand grip; I would not rely on that but could be worth a try.
Otherwise you have 2 choices:
1. Leave it on your wrist, knowing you are still getting calories burned and active minutes based on heart rate.
2. If you are more concerned about steps, you can often get them detected better by putting tracker in pocket or somehow pinned to clothing. But then you lose heart rate during that time.
