Last night, unusually, my wife and I both failed to get detailed sleep stats. I have the charge 2 and she has the Alta. It left me wondering whether the calculation is done on the watch or on the server? Does anyone know?

It's mainly on the server. Fitbit say:
"When you sync your device in the morning, we use your movement and heart rate patterns to estimate your sleep cycles from the previous night."

Thank you. It does make me wonder if Fitbit had an issue, then, as both of us not getting detailed sleep has never happened before.
First world problem!
Thanks again

I did an experiment this evening. I wrote down the times that the fitbit siad I had slept bur for which it had been unable to give full details. I then deleted the entry. I then added the entry manually but shortened it by 30 minutes off each end and, hey presto, detailed sleep details! I then edited the newly added sleep making it longer and longer until it lost the details again. At that point you delete the sleep but add it back in manually with the last working times.
This does imply it is atually worked out in the app but who knows. I do tend to go to the home page and refresh between each edit.
Maybe that will help someone else who gets occasional failures
