Tonight I've been totally underwelmed by my fitbit! I' making dinner and I notice a message on my phone saying "yay I'm an over achiever!" Yes had to read it on my phone cos i cant connect phone to fitbit and god knows ive tried. Anyway ive never been called an over achiever before so I check my wrist and sure enough I've exceeded my daily goal by 2500 steps. So I continue stirring the risotto for 20 min and bingo I've made 5000 more steps. This cant be right or chefs would all be very slim fit people. Whats going on here Fitbit???  Im' close to putting it away in a draw with the other pedometers from over the years.

The Charge 2 is on your wrist so that is the only motion it sees. It detects steps by the normal swinging of the arms with walking.  Some other motions might be detected as steps but fitbit tries to tell the difference, but still sometimes does detect false steps. Most people find that over the course of a day, the extra steps are more significant.  However there are certain rhythmic activities that cannot be distinguished from walking from the wrist's viewpoint. Stirring something on the stove seems like the perfect example of that. Another one I have read of is knitting.  One possibility is to use that activity as a time to charge your fitbit, or you could switch it to the other wrist for that time.

@Lecarroll Welcome! Thanks for being part of our Community!  Adding to @JohnnyRow's great explanation you can negate these steps by logging a driving activity on your account. This way you'll see a more accurate number even on days you cook.

Let me know how it goes!
