Unresponsive device - Error loop

Fitbit Charge 2 is a year plus old and a daily driver for tracking my fitness activity. All the sudden, with confidence that I had fully charged my device in the morning, I noticed it was dead, no screen, nothing. So overnight I charged my device again, as routine. In the morning though, removing it from the charger, the screen was locked in the battery life indicator, after tapping and holding the side button for 4 seconds, it responded with the screen showing the on/off notification indicator. Afterwards, the device began looping endlessly, turning off and on notifications, as if the side button was being pushed over and over again, turning off and on the notifications, vibrating on and on.

In order to break the loop I held down the button without letting go, then the screen on the watch would appear as normal. I can tap and move from screen to screen but as soon as I let go of that button, the loop starts up again to no avail.

Then I did a reboot, holding the button for 4 seconds, while on the charger. The logo appears normal yet, not a moment later, the loop is immediately back, on and off, on and off goes the notification indicator.

I've run out of solutions and hope to find some answers here. At this point, the watch is totally unusable. Leaving it on the charger seems to be the only way of getting it to stop.
