But even if you press the button, you can't see anything.  The screen is covered by the charger.

I think you may have the charger the wrong way round. It clips from behind so you can see the screen.

Are you sure that you have a Charge 2? There really is no way that its charger can cover the screen. 

How do I charge my Fitbit device?

I generally pick the unit up and look at the display. Now it is easy to tap the button or unplug/plug in and the level will be displayed .

Or sync the unit and the app will display the current level
