Why is the app not allowing me to set 1/2 mile pace notifications on my run?  I go in and check half mile and it automatically kicks me off the app.  I also must go in and change walk to run every time I track a run?

That sounds like you may be being affected by an ongoing bug that fitbit are looking into. Keep an eye on the following thread where they are posting updates:
