Counting steps while riding bike

This can't be right.

Although I started and stopped my 4 hour bike ride on my inspire hr, it gave me credit for many, many, many steps in that 4 hours.

Also, the other day I got credit for steps while I was on the elliptical trainer.

This is not helpful.

Hello @catester

First and foremost awesome job biking for four hours! As far as your increase in steps during your bike ride....I don’t know the type of bike you have but does it require you to shift gears often? Drinking lots of water with your dominant hand maybe? Or possibly a very bumpy trail ride? I’m just offering some ideas that might have happened during your bike ride that would cause you to move your dominant hand (same one you wear your tracker on) more than you calculated. Although your on a bike the tracker can still sense movement. Just like the elliptical....your not actually moving in physical distance but you do pull your arms back and forth while pushing down on the elliptical steps. The tracker is indeed sensing your movements.

You said in your post “many many many” steps but I wasn’t sure if it was outrageous amount or not. I would personally just keep an eye on it and if you still think it’s not calculating your steps properly I would suggest “restarting your Fitbit”.....you won’t lose any data doing that but maybe it might help if you think there is still a problem. Here’s how to restart your inspire HR:

  1. Plug the charging cable into the USB port on your computer or any UL-certified USB wall charger.
  2. Hold the other end of the charging cable near the port on the back of the tracker until it attaches magnetically. The pins on the charging cable must connect securely with the port.
  3. Press and hold the button on your tracker for 5 seconds.
  4. Release the button. When you see a smile icon and the tracker vibrates, the tracker restarted.

😃 I hope I was able to help in someway

Thanks.

Mostly flat trail, never more than 2% grade. (Used to be a railroad bed.) I might have shifted three or four times over the 52km ride. Not especially rough.

I wear my tracker on my left wrist. I am right-handed. Left is my non-dominant hand, which is where Fitbit recommends wearing it.

Two screen shots. First shows the start time and duration of the ride, roughly 9am to 1pm. Second shows my steps. I can't see how many "many many many" is either, but I *can* see that the steps were clearly recorded during the same timeframe as the bike ride.

Ride starts at roughly 9am and lasts about 4 hrs.Ride starts at roughly 9am and lasts about 4 hrs.

Many, many, many steps recorded in same timeframe as bike ride. Many, many, many steps recorded in same timeframe as bike ride.

This is clearly wrong.

Have you noticed that your Fitbit is recording your steps in a more accurate way now @catester ? If not you might want to do a restart. You can see how it’s done here: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1186/?q=Restart+Inspire&l=en_US&fs=Search&pn=1

But I wonder if your Fitbit auto recognized your exercise because I think it appears to be about 12,000 steps for 4 hours 37 mins seem very appropriate to me.

It's never appropriate to be recording steps when I'm doing a bike ride. It's appropriate when I'm walking. When I'm doing a bike ride, the appropriate thing to record is a bike ride. It did that, but it recorded steps, too.

It's recording my steps reasonably accurately when I'm walking. That wasn't the issue. I didn't ride today, so I don't know if it's still doing the double recording thing.

Hello again @catester

I suppose the only solution I can offer (since you stated your Fitbit is reasonably accurate while walking) is to go in an edit your activity during times like you described.... riding your bike, elliptical. You can find out how to do this here: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1306

Same, I didn't seem to notice any problems. I love bike hicking, I think it's my favorite sport ever and it's the main form of cardio, or any activity that I do for that matter, so I paid close attention to it and it was all okay from what I could notice. I just got a new Vont illumination headlight for the bike and I'm really excited to get going again after the break I made during the pandemic. I usually go with friends, so that's why I took such a long break with the pandemic cause I don't enjoy going alone. Back at it again!
