I think Fitbit could easily lower the comments of people with GPS tracking issues with the following statement.
Sometimes your device will provide you with a handy map of your path while exercising. Will it always? No. It's kind of a game. You will find something that seems to work - say, resetting the device before an activity, or uninstalling and reinstalling the app, turning GPS on and off, deleting data, facing the wind and making wishes. Bonus points if you install the app on a different device and try all the workarounds on that device too.
We will make your valiant efforts pay off -- but only sometimes. It's more fun this way and adds a level of excitement before you set out. You can even keep track of your efforts to try to see a pattern. This will sharpen your observational skills.
We know we've got you hooked because the desktop app is really quite good. You can easily track various health trends across time, even when your device is not providing the full data it could. And if you've been around for 8 years through various devices, you'll stick with us, even if you did try to switch to the Motiv ring, you naughty person.

Ha, ha, @fanofpi , I did enjoy this one... I have to admit I have never been a fan of “connected GPS” because the one thing that was consistent was it works inconsistently for me (though I know folks who swear by it and don’t seem to have issues).
That’s why I am hoping to get my hands on the new Charge 4 with its built in GPS. Downside is built in GPS takes a lot of battery...
I don’t want to add insult to injury by giving you an extra tip after 8 years, but have you tried just tracking the exercise in the app and giving up on the “connected” bit? I think that works more consistently, but it’s a lot less fun...
I’m glad that you fessed up to your naughty infidelity with the motiv ring, and glad to see you back!

Ah I do know about tracking with the app, but didn't realize I would get the map. I will try that next time. Thanks for the suggestion.
As for the Charge 4, I like the smaller profile of the Inspire. I had the Charge HR and it would get caught on things as I flail my arms about in the natural course of living -- putting things in bags, reaching behind furniture, etc.
