How to get more accurate amount of steps in my Inspire HR

Hello everyone,

I've noticed that the step count with my Inspire HR is very inaccurate.

After midnight (when the step count reset itself) I tested the matter. I sat and watched TV and saw that the step count is 150. After going upstairs and brushing my teeth the count went up to 677 steps.

Is there any way to modify that? I do not wish to register steps that I definitely didn't do. When I reach my daily goal I want it to be because I worked hard, and not because my Fitbit is adding 15% of the steps.

I would appreciate any tips,

Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out the Fitbit Community. We really appreciate your time and for checking the accuracy of your Inspire HR.

You might get a few extra steps from arm swings since your tracker will sense the movements of your hand. So, as a friendly tip I suggest to wear your Inspire HR in your non dominant arm. It's important to specify whether you wear the device on your dominant or non-dominant wrist during setup, but you can do so on your Fitbit app:

  • The dominant wrist setting decreases the sensitivity of step counting and should reduce any over counting of steps when your body is not moving. Your dominant hand is the one you use for writing and eating.
  • The non-dominant wrist setting increases the sensitivity of step counting and should reduce any under counting of steps.

To start, the Wrist setting is set to non-dominant. Change your wrist setting in the Fitbit app > Account > Inspire HR > Wrist Placement. You can find this information other important facts about Fitbit accuracy here: How accurate are Fitbit devices?

Give it a try and please keep me posted.

I have a similar issue with my new Inspire HR. Yesterday was my first full day wearing the inspire and it logged about 12,000 steps... even though I was at my desk all day, barely moving. I have previously had the Flex And the Alta and never had accuracy issues. I have the device on my non-dominant hand and have tried the app setting on both non-dominant and also dominant, seems to make no difference. What else can I do to sort this issue? Thanks

Hi @CAxelby nice to see you here. It's always great to see new faces around.

Sorry for the issues that you're having with your Fitbit Inspire accuracy, thanks for trying the suggested steps above. Please make sure to check to follow the steps to restart your Fitbit to see if this helpsOur team is working on this. You feedback is really important for us, at this moment our team is working on this. You can try the steps suggested here too: How accurate are Fitbit devices?

Please note, when working at a desk, cooking, or performing other activities with arm movements, a device on your wrist may add some steps. When you’re doing activities that involve arm movement such as working or cooking you often walk a few steps in-between stationary periods as well, so the device tries to give you credit for those steps.

If you want to remove extra steps from your daily total check this information:  How do I edit or delete Fitbit data and activities?

Doesn't work.  Non dominant hand, set to dominant.  No luck.  Turned off GPS,  no luck,  turned off auto work out.  No luck.  You guys need to provide a sensitivity setting!!!!!!!!

Whenever you walk , run for exercise your arms will always move so the Fitbit will should twice the amount of steps. The device should have been designed better to be accurate.

After being away from Fitbit since 2012, I bought a fitbit inspire (that was probably not smart, since the old Fitbit never worked accurately). I only wore it when walking, not when inside, etc... just now as a test - I remember my old one was WAY off. I am 5'10" with a normal stride. My step count, miles, and calories burned are double what they should be. I did not walk 4miles and 11,000 steps just now. The dominant hand should  not matter as I only wore it walking, not "around the house" or doing dishes. Is there a way to adjust the stride length?

I only just purchased it 2 days ago (had to spend a day backing up and updating iOS to work with your app) and am ready to get a refund.

I just got the Sense, and I have the opposite problem. I took 120 steps and it counted none. I have it set to non dominant.
