Inconsistencies converting steps to miles

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

My steps:miles ratio is very skewed.

  • I use the Inspire HR with the most recent update and only for walking as I'm doing PT, no running/biking/swimming etc.
  • I set it to the precalculated Fitbit stride determined by height/weight/gender.
  • The device is new, not even a month of use yet.
  • I've reset/restarted my device and uninstalled/reinstalled the app.

While it's been inconsistent from the beginning, this last week was enough to reach out to support.

  • 02/10   5,460 steps -> 1.46 miles
  • 02/15   5,474 steps -> 2.18 miles

  • 02/13   14,400 steps -> 5.41 miles
  • 02/16   14,401 steps -> 5.58 miles

  • 02/14   17,040 steps -> 5.72 miles
  • 02/17   23,494 steps -> 5.76 miles

Some days I have similar steps and varying miles.. Some days it's same millage with a huge step gap. Wondering whether to return this device and go with something else.

2 questions:

Are you ever connected to phone's GPS?

Do you ever manually log an activity?

I have GPS enabled on the device but as most of my steps are on a machine during physical therapy sessions (treadmill/seated elliptical, etc) it doesn't have much distance to track. Purely going off of converting steps to miles.

Also no, never add anything manually.

You might try turning GPS off to make sure it is not sometimes getting (very small) distance from GPS instead of calculating from step count.

In looking to turn off GPS as you suggest, I realize I was mistaken. All numbers provided have been without GPS active on the FitBit.

I've posted this problem here before, but never any answer.

I've updated, uninstalled & reinstalled, restarted device and turned off GPS.  The stride is automatically calculated by FitBit using personal info. Today I have about 4k steps so far and only .31 miles walked.

Please enlighten me to a fix or I'll be returning and getting something more accurate from another company.

@J5158 It's nice to see you on the Community. Thanks for taking the time to share the data that you're receiving with your Inspire HR.

I appreciate the troubleshooting tried and for following the advice provided by @JohnnyRow. I've merged your post here to keep it organized.

All devices with GPS sensors require a direct path to GPS satellites to calculate location. A weak GPS signal might affect the accuracy of your route and other activity data. Your device uses your step count to calculate distance until it finds a signal, so the total distance calculated for a workout may be slightly less accurate when GPS isn't available for the entire time.

Before creating a case on your behalf with our Support team, I would like you to enter your stride length on your account and try again. Follow the tips mentioned in this article: How does my Fitbit device calculate my daily activity?

I'll be around if you have any additional questions.
