Hi, @EAViney , welcome to the forums! I assume you have checked your settings to make sure that “dim screen” is turned off and that you do not have “do not disturb” or “sleep mode” turned on? You can check these by swiping down on your screen until you come to the settings menu.
If your screen is set to normal brightness and neither sleep nor do not disturb are on, then I am afraid that the only solution outdoors is to step into the shade and cup your hands over the screen to read it. This is an issue that others have reported and is unlikely to be a malfunction of your Fitbit. (I found this myself on bright summer days, although I personally don’t have a problem in dull weather.)
When you are ready to upgrade you may like to know that the colour screen on the new Inspire 3 apparently has entirely solved this issue - I have not seen any reports of difficulty reading that screen.
I am sorry not to have a better solution for you.
