Swimming - wrong lenghts total

I bought an Inspire HR to record the lengths I swim. I almost always swim 50 or 64 (~ 1 mile in a 25 m pool). However, the totals usually read 49 or 63, or less, although the times are correct. I swim non - stop, don't change stroke and maintain a steady pace. Any ideas how I can get a more accurate count, which is what I bought the device for?

@Ballymenapaul Welcome to the Community. I'm glad to hear that you bought a Fitbit Inspire HR to record your swimming.

I appreciate the details mentioned. You mentioned you're swimming non stop, not changing stroke and maintaining a steady pace, please check the following information as to why your swim data might be wrong:

  • You completed only a few laps
  • You stopped to rest multiple times or in the middle of the pool
  • You stopped to rest for longer than 60 seconds after completing a pool length
  • You changed your stroke type midway through a length
  • You swam with a kickboard or without using your arms
  • You swam less than the minimum duration needed for your swim to be automatically recognized

If you're not doing anything of the above, please restart your Inspire HR and try again.

Keep me posted.

Hi Thanks for your reply. You are correct and, as I stated, I took none of those actions you suggested - a steady pace, non-stop, no change of stroke, no pause, no use of boards, usual distance is 50 lengths, time and distance duration well over minimum, swimming three times a week etc. etc.

I restarted my Fitbit previously about two weeks ago to sort other myriad problems, which it did, except for this swim lap count (and a worsening problem with recording cycling which I will post separately).

The problem has recurred since I posted this but I will restart and try again on Monday.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi again,

I have restarted my device twice now but with no improvement - I'm still losing a length on most swims. A swimming buddy suggested that I don't stop my Fitbit on my last length but turn, push off, stop after 2 metres then stop the device. This actually seems to work but only 50% of the time so far, including today. While I was investigating this problem I noticed that my step count was very high - due to two problems: 1:- my device doesn't always reset to zero at midnight meaning on one day I had 6000+ steps just getting out of bed and going to the bathroom at 05:45!! and 2:- when I swim for approx 40 - 60 mins I am credited with 1000s of steps!!  All my step achievements are now very dubious!

Finally, a problem I was holding off on but might as well say now: I cycle regularly about twice a week. Very, very, rarely does the device record distance or speed any more and I almost never get a route map despite being set up for GPS (those I did get were months ago and were incorrect). I have my phone with me which records stats so the GPS signal is obviously ok in the area. All I get when cycling is a read out of time (usually very accurate) and graphs for heartrate and calories when I really want distance, speed and route.

I think my device is in meltdown! Please can you help?

Hi again,

I replied on the 18th March with additional issues but got no response. I understand the current global crisis and hope you and your colleagues are well. Since then my Fitbit is acting very strange indeed and I am restarting it regularly but to no avail. Please note the problems to date but I am now also having problems with hundreds of steps being credited to me when I am either swimming or cycling, or even sleeping on one occasion. I have already raised a problem with incorrect lengths total when swimming and most recently with cycle trips statistics not being recorded other than heart rate and calories - not what I want.

I think it is now clear my Fitbit is malfunctioning and needs replaced. How do I go about that?

@Ballymenapaul Thanks for getting back. Sorry for the delayed reply.

I appreciate your kind words. Thanks for the details mentioned regarding the amount of steps you're receiving.

Since your Ionic isn't resetting at midnight and tracking many steps when you slept. I've created a case with our Support team. Due to recent events affecting our operations, we may need more than 7 business days to respond

Regarding your question about your Ionic adding steps when you're cycling, when you ride a bike on bumpy trails, your device may add some steps. For most customers, the number of extra steps added when riding a bike isn’t significant when compared to your overall stats. If your device has an Exercise app, make sure you choose the Bike exercise before starting your workout. If you use automatic tracking to detect your bike ride, make sure the Outdoor Bike exercise is set to be automatically recognized.

I'll be around if you have any additional questions.
