I've had an Alta for a very long time and was recently gifted an Inspire HR. I'm super excited to switch over but I'm worried that the steps and activity I've tracked on the Alta so far today will be lost if I switch over to the Inspire this evening. Does that happen? If so, should I just wait until tomorrow morning and switch over first thing?

Just sync right before you switch, and data will be saved any time of day.  Syncing moves any outstanding data on your tracker to the Fitbit database in the cloud.  But make sure the sync really does complete.

Also make sure you use the same account/email so it will tie into the same historical data.
