When I open the alarms, everything is in code. Screen reads:

What is wrong? No update. Maybe last update did this?

It's worth trying a restart of your fitbit by pressing and holding the button for 10 seconds. It's much like rebooting a computer - it does no harm and can sort out all sorts of issues.

A shutdown through the settings, about may also be helpful if a restart doesnt work. Hold in the same buttons for a restart to turn on.

Thank you. I have tried that twice already. Once before looking for an update and again after an app update. Still reads in code.
