Auto workout v Manual workout

I go to the gym and do a similar routine with small changes here and there.  I have, until 2 days ago, not manually logged anything on the watch.  If it picks up the elliptical, or any active minutes, then whatever... the most important thing to me is the calorie burn.

Yesterday and today, I went ahead and started the "workout" under the exercise icon and it seems like I burned A TON more cals than I normally do.  Is fitbit adding more burned cals because I'm logging it as a workout.... what is going on?

Hi, @SunsetRunner! That's really strange. Both methods should just be using your heart rate to calculate your calorie burn. A question for you - how much of the time does your auto detect register? Is it possible that when you are starting the detection yourself it's just running for a lot longer total?
