Bike & run exercise not connecting

Can anyone help. I’ve a Fitbit Versa 2 and when I go into run or bike it continues to say connecting. When I have the app open and my phone with me the bike and run exercises connect to my phone but when my phone is not with me it’s not connected anymore and won’t track my distance when I am cycling or running.

After you select 'Bike' or 'Run', click the gear icon at top right; then scroll down to 'Connected-GPS' and toggle it off to make it stop trying to connect.  Then it will estimate your run distance by multiplying number of steps time stride length.  But it will not be able to give any bike distance.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
