Can Versa record exercise without using my phone?

The point of getting a smartwatch was to not have to take my phone everywhere, especially when I'm being active outside, but it seems not to be able to auto-recognize record exercise without the phone. I know it needs the phone GPS to record distance but I thought it would at least recognize my heart rate increases for a sustained period. Or not?

Phone should have no effect on recognizing exercise.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
