How can I change the clock display on my Fitbit Versa 2. The one that stays on the screen, it is the one before I press the side button to get clock and stats?

It's not something I've done myself but I found this in the Versa 2 manual:

I've gone to the settings and set my clock to digital, but it's not changing it.  When I go back to the clock, it is still in analog mode.  Any help would be appreciated.

Same problem here...

If you use "always on display" mode, the "clock faces" only work when unlocked.

Please correct this

It is very odd that "Always On" doesn't simply leave your selected clock face on all of the time.  It also appears that the Always On display does not change unless you actually hit the side button.  I would think it would switch to your selected clock face when you move the watch towards your eyes.  Apparently not.  Thankfully the default analog watch face that Always On uses isn't too terrible.

I called fit bit. They said when you choose your clock face you need to choose from the always on clock faces. Makes sense I guess. I just wish the one I chose was an always on face...
