I've been meaning to post this for a while. But as I'm here following the 4.1.3 update let's go...
Starting exercise tracking from the device is a bit hit and miss. It spends ages just "connecting" and you'll be lucky if it connects at all. That's walking with the Versa on my left wrist and a new Samsung S10 in my left pocket. If it does connect you'll be lucky if you get a complete map.
The way to fix it is to open the app on the phone, the Versa then connects. Which makes the ability to start an exercise from your watch a bit redundant.
So as you've now got the app open on the phone you may as well start the exercise from the phone. As a bonus you'll now get two sets of results for the exercise!!! Both have a map and both have an indication of the distance traveled and believe it or not both are different.
Yet another instance of poor integration by Fitbit, Device and App developers not talking to each other and certainly not doing any detailed integration testing.
Try it...

Not entirely the same issue, but the second part is the same.
Starting a workout from my phone results in two workout sessions... one recorded by the Fitbit App on my phone (without heart data) and one on my versa (with heart data but less distance).
Then both get synced to Strava, with different data.....
