Fitbit tracking too many steps

I just got a fitbit versa lite recently, and it's tracking way more steps than I actually do. I work from home, and my apartment is quite small, so unless I'm specifically exercise or going out, I don't take that many steps per day, but my watch is saying I take 3000+ steps on days when the extent of my movement has been walking between my desk, the kitchen and the bathroom.

Here are some more specific examples I've recorded:

At 5am, I had apparently done 800+ steps that day. That day had only been 5 hours so far, and the most active thing I'd done was took pasta. No way I'd taken more than 100 steps even at the most wildly optimistic estimate.

It told me I did 300 steps when I slept. I might have gone to the bathroom once or twice - which is attached to my bedroom, no more than a couple of meters from the bed - but that's it, no way was that 300 steps.

I haven't properly recorded any other examples, but I've noticed the step count for each day is always way too high, much more than I'm actually doing. Is there any way I can tweak the settings to fix this? I'd really like to get an accurate step count?

Welcome on board @Attenia, it's nice to see a new member around!

Congratulations on your new Fitbit Versa Lite! I am glad to assist you with your concern about your device tracking too many steps. Thank you for providing the additional details and the examples of your activity and tracked results. Your device is a motion sensor on your wrist and it may count some steps when you're doing arm movements, however it shouldn't be significant when compared to your overall stats. For more information, please see this help article: How accurate are Fitbit devices?

I recommend changing your wrist setting to "Dominant". This wrist setting decreases the sensitivity of step counting and should reduce any over counting of steps when your body is not moving. Your dominant hand is the one you use for writing and eating. You can change your wrist setting in the Fitbit app.

I also recommend checking that your height is correct as it also may affect your step count.

I'll be around if you need further help!
