How is the watch syncing?

I have no smartphone, and my main computer runs Linux. I have a Windows 10 VM that periodically runs, but the watch seems to be able to report to fitbit.com without it. I get the weekly reports and they are seemingly accurate. The watch is BT paired with my computer, which is connected to the web at all times, but the fitbit app is not installed because it doesn't support Linux. So, I don't understand how it syncs with the site without the app?

One possibility is someone near you or that you sit near to has a dongle on their computer with the Fitbit program running. The dongle will sync any Fitbit device nearby.

There's no smart phone or Windows PC running nearby. The watch pairs with my Linux computer, which is connected to the web, and then somehow syncs with this site. I have confirmed the data is correct, because I did an unusual workout on Sunday, and that information was passed on to the site, which triggered an Urban Boot badge.
