Music control always shows play button and never pause button

Versa music control from my phone is working, but when music is playing the button on screen still shows play vs a pause button. Pushing the button does toggle play/pause on my device, but the icon never toggles. 

Is there a way to fix this or is this normal?

Just saw a screenshot someone took that did show a pause icon so I'm guessing only showing the play icon isn't normal.

Anybody know how to fix this? I'm using Spotify and a pixel 2 xl if that makes any difference. 

Edit: still only the play icon when using apps other than Spotify.

I am facing a similar problem with my Fitbit Versa Music control.  While the music is playing it is showing Play button sometimes instead of Pause. And then when I hit the play button, it toggles to pause button (music continues to play). 

Then when i hit the pause button, the music pauses, but the button still remains as pause and it doesn't allow me to play again. Play button just doesn't show up. 

The only workaround to play the music again is to hit backward or forward buttons.

Same exact issue. Icon never changes to pause, just stays on the play button. Music does stop and start, but the icon doesn't change. Anyone find a fix?
