I received my versa life and straight out of the box, before doing ANYTHING, I get the error message “data not cleared. Sync and try again”. Is this normal? Why would data need to be cleared if it’s a new device?

The message should not appear since it's a new device. However, I'd like you to try a restart. To do so, follow the steps listed in this help article.
After this, follow the setup process as advised in this help page.
